Principal's message - week 7
Greetings North Plains Families!
The first full week is over, complete with fire drill, spirit assembly, and all outside recesses, yea! Hopefully your kids are coming home excited about school and anxious to come each day.
Glencoe Feeder Elementary Schools are excited to offer a social media information night to parents of 4-6 grade students. Food and childcare will be provided as we share critical information to parents to help keep their children safe online. Join us on Oct. 19 at 6PM at Patterson Elementary.
As you know, the Hillsboro School District is putting a bond on the Nov. 7 ballot. This bond would provide a 2nd elementary school here in North Plains to accomodate the population growth, and many other critical improvements at NPES. I've attached 2 fliers to the email for you to get more information, and there will be a video at Back to School Night as well. There is a lot more info on the HSD website, and if you have questions, please ask!
PTO!! Meets the first and third Thursday of the month at 10:30 AM. This year we will meet in the library. Please come to our next meeting on Sept. 21, get to know some other parents, and become more involved in our school!
Did you know the HSD has a school based health center located at Century High School? The center offers a variety of health services, including dental and mental health services. A flier with more information is attached to the email.
Just a reminder that all adults that are not school employees must enter the building through the front door. In the afternoon when students are being picked up, it can be convenient to catch the door by the primary wing and just go inside. The problem is that we don't know who is in the building when people enter that way, and although you may be safe, someone else may not be. Please help us keep EVERYONE safe by only entering through the front entrance. Thank you!
Have you seen one of the phrases, "9 or less is best!" or "Every minute, every day!" Both of these help to promote attendance in school. When a student misses 10 days a year, from kindergarten through 6th grade, that adds up to more than half of a school year missed! Here are some tips from Attendance works http://www.attendanceworks.org/about/what-can-i-do/parents/
- Establish and stick to the basic routines (going to bed early, waking up on time, etc.) that will help your child develop the habit of on-time attendance.
- Talk to your child about why going to school every day is critical and important unless they are sick. If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and work with the teacher, administrator or afterschool provider to get them excited about going to school.
- Come up with back up plans for who to turn to (another family member, a neighbor or fellow parents) to help you get your child to school if something comes up (e.g. another child gets sick, your car breaks down, etc.).
- Reach out for help if you are experiencing tough times (e.g. transportation, unstable housing, loss of a job, health problems) that make it difficult to get your child to school. Other parents, your child’s teacher, principal, social worker, school nurse, afterschool providers or community agencies can help you problem solve or connect you to a needed resource.
- If your child is absent, work with the teacher to make sure she or he has an opportunity to learn and make up for the academics missed.
Attendance really does matter!
Finally, we had a great time at the golf tournament on Friday night at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course. Not sure how much money was raised, but we know it was significant! Thank you to the parent volunteers who came out to support, and a special thank you to Karolyn Duyck for getting so many great sponsors and raffle prizes!! And remember to thank Joanna Mehaffey from Columbia Bank for making it all possible!
Hopefully you've made it to the end:) Have a great weekend!
Becky
