The Culture of UKraine

The people of Ukraine have many celebrations each year. There is one certain celebration called Vechornytsi have a long History in Ukraine. "Razom nas bahato, nas ne podalty" Is a popular and cultural Ukrainian statement meaning "Together we are many! We cannot be defeated!"

The main language is Ukrainian, but Russian is spoken throughout the country too.

Religion is practiced daily in Ukraine. Their main religions is Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Eastern Catholicism, and Roman Catholic. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is the largest church in the country. The second largest is the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. And not very far behind is the Roman Catholic Church.

Dance is a very big part of the Ukrainian culture. When woman dance, they where very colorful costumes, mostly blue, green, red, and black. They also where red boots when they dance.

In Ukraine food is also a big part of their culture. There is a soup named Borshch made out of beets, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, and dill. Another popular food is salad.

Ukraine's Government

Ukraine is a parliamentary democracy. It is ran by Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the prime minister. He serves a 5 year term. Ukraine's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing.

Ukraine's Current Events

Tensions between Ukraine and Russia started when Russia "annexed" Crimea last year. Kiev accused Moscow of supporting pro-Russia separatist in Ukraine that have been gong against the Ukrainian military for control of cities and sites. Also, Russia accuses the West of supporting Ukraine's effort to take back areas of Ukraine that are strongholds of the separatists. This has to 5,100 deaths.

Ukraine's Landmarks

One of Ukraine's most popular landmarks, located in Kiev, is called the Golden Gates. It was constructed by "Yaroslav the Wise." They were built in 1017-1024 which is about the same time that the Saint Sophia Cathedral was erected. Another popular landmark in Kiev is the Saint Sophia Cathedral. It is one of Ukraine's best known landmarks. The name comes from the 6th-century Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople.
