The Red Wolf

Endangered Species of North Carolina

Common Name

Red Wolf

Scientific Name

Canis Rufus

The Red Wolf currently inhabits the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina. They also used to be found in the mountain region as well.

So why is it endangered?

The biggest contributors to the endangerment of the Red Wolf are habitat loss and predator control programs. In the 1980s, biologists could only manage to capture 17 of these wolves.

What's being done?

To protect the Red Wolves from extinction, a restoration program was implemented at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Now, some wolves are being released and are gradually moving throughout the state.
