For the parents and patrons of the Fulton School District
October 25, 2019
A message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Patrons,
Our first grading period has ended and we hope you have or will be participating in parent-teacher conferences. Just as your individual student(s) are assessed in each subject, I suspect you are aware of national and statewide assessments the District uses. Those results are now available.
As part of the Annual Performance Report, APR, our District three-year average MAP results parallel the state three-year average. English Language Arts, ELA, is almost identical to the state average in both the whole district and subgroup results. Math results for the whole district are similar to the state average while subgroup results are slightly below the state average. Science data is not available at this writing. Our 4-year graduation rate of 86.7% decreased from the prior year, yet the 5-year graduation rate of 92.2% increased from the prior year. College and Career Readiness is almost identical to the state average. Attendance continues to be a challenge at 88.3% just below the 90% state target.
Juniors last year were provided the opportunity to take the ACT at District expense if they wished. Results in all areas improved over the prior year. In fact, our average Composite Score of 21.4 was the highest in five years and exceeded the average State Composite Score of 20.8. FPS will continue to provide Juniors an opportunity to take the ACT at District expense if they choose to participate.
The value of this information is to provide a direction for improving curriculum and activities for your student(s). However, we are taking additional steps that will provide teachers and students with immediate feedback in order to adjust strategies to be effective for every student.
Questions regarding your student can be directed to their teacher and/or building principal.
Thank you for sending great student(s) for us to work with!
Jacque A. Cowherd, Ed.D.
Whether We Like It or Not, Winter Weather is on the Way!
School Closing Information
Winter weather will be here before we know it, and the Fulton Public Schools are preparing for the inevitable snow day. Officials consider many things when making decisions on inclement weather days; however, the final decision is always determined by what is best for the students. Student safety is the top priority of our school district.
Cancellation of School
The decision to dismiss early or to cancel a full day of school is announced on local television stations as soon as a decision is made. The district will launch the School Messenger phone messaging system to call the home or cell number you have provided the school upon enrollment of your child (if during the school day, an email and text message will be sent--not a phone call.) Please make sure this information is correct in our system. The district will also notify TV stations KOMU - channel 8, KRCG - channel 13, and KMIZ - channel 17. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT ASKS PARENTS OR GUARDIANS NOT TO CALL SCHOOLS OR TELEVISION STATIONS ABOUT THE CANCELLATION OF SCHOOL. The website address – www.fulton58.org - will be updated with early dismissal and cancellation notices as well as Facebook--Fulton Public Schools and Twitter-- @FPSHornets.
Occasionally, school will be dismissed early due to bad weather. If an early dismissal is required, an announcement will be made that school will be dismissed a specific number of hours early from the building’s normal dismissal time. School buses will run beginning at the dismissal time announced on those days school is canceled in midday.
