Robertsville Review
February 23rd
I <3 STEM Night (update)
On Thursday, February 15, the Robertsville Middle School gymnasium buzzed with unconventional sounds: the hum of a 3-D printer, whirs from small robots, exclamations about cubesats-forensics-digital arts-health sciences; and the Bond Theme belted out by the Jazz Band. That evening an estimated 350 students, their families, and members of the community attended RMS’s first I <3 STEM (I Love STEM) Night to celebrate the exciting things happening in education at RMS. The event was funded by a grant from National PTA to support activities during their annual “Take Your Family to School Week."
STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning that integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics across all disciplines, including English, Social Studies and the arts. In 2017, Oak Ridge became the first school district in Tennessee to receive AdvancED STEM certification, and Robertsville’s extensive STEM offerings were in evidence on Thursday night.
A variety of RMS clubs and classes provided exhibits and hands-on activities throughout the evening, including First Robotics, Technology Student Association, Tech Titans, SECME, NASA Class, Digital Arts, English-Language Arts, and Journalism. The RMS Jazz Band and Orchestra created a festive atmosphere with their playing. RMS PTSA kept attendees well fed with free pizza from Pizza Inn and homemade dessert. The Oak Ridge Schools’ Coordinated School Health program led active whole-body-health STEM games in one area, while students from the Tennessee Technological University teaching program led STEM crafts, projects, and robotics activities in another. Clinical interns in the ORHS Health Sciences academy provided blood pressure screening, and Anderson County Health Department provided health education. Barnes and Noble Booksellers and Comcast staffed informational booths and donated door prizes, including a drone and lap top computer.
The event, advertised as “the first annual” I <3 STEM Night, very successfully brought together students, families, and community members to experience and learn about STEM education at RMS in a carnival-style celebration.
PTSA STEM NIGHT WINNER!
Eli was the winner of the $20.00 gift card to Wal-Mart for using his math reasoning and estimating skills to guess the numbers of beans in the jar at the PTSA STEM Night. There were 2,142 beans in the jar. Eli estimated 2,102! Way to go, Eli! Proving once again, great math skills pay off!!
Black History Month
Influential Females
Madam C.J. Walker
Bessie Coleman
In 1922, a time of both gender and racial discrimination, Coleman broke barriers and became the world's first black woman to earn a pilot's license. Because flying schools in the United States denied her entry, she took it upon herself to learn French and move to France to achieve her goal. After only seven months, Coleman earned her license from France's well known Caudron Brother's School of Aviation.
Though she wanted to start a flying school for African Americans when she returned to the U.S., Coleman specialized in stunt flying and parachuting, and earned a living barnstorming and performing aerial tricks. In 1922, she became the first African-American woman in America to make a public flight.

Caroline
Caroline is a fascinating kid! She plays the banjo, collects vinyl records and rock crystals, and enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons.
She has a passion for her community, environment and animals. She can often be found picking up trash around Oak Ridge and has plans to volunteer at the local animal shelter when she turns eighteen.
Caroline intends to be the first person in her family to graduate college with a science emphasis. She plans to pursue either marine biology or forensic anthropology. She also has aspirations to travel Russia, Hawaii, and the Black Forest in Germany.
We wish her the best and thank her for being an inspiration and role model at RMS.
Club of the Week
Geography Bee Club
The Geography Bee club has been around at Robertsville since 1988. That’s 30 years! Dr. Canton Napier was the first teacher to sponsor the club, and Mr. Hamilton took over in 1996, his first year at RMS.
The purpose of the club is for students to gain geography knowledge in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. Students work puzzles, play games, have oral competitions, do group work, watch videos, discuss current events, and study maps.
Members of the club also participate in the school level of the National Geographic Bee. The RMS school winner advances to the Tennessee State Geographic bee and competes against 100 students from across Tennessee. Occasionally, a Robertsville student wins the state bee and advances to the National Level in Washington, D.C., where they compete against students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Pacific Island Territories and U.S. armed forces schools.
Three Robertsville students have advanced to the highest level of the bee. Hunter Ripley won the Tennessee bee in 2004, Simon Crow won in 2012, and Adi Sujithkumar won in 2015. Those students all won an expense-paid trip to Washington and were treated to 4-5 days of sightseeing and social activities. This year’s Robertsville school winner, Matt Kitts, will be making his third trip to the state bee, where he hopes to make the top 10 and compete for a state crown.
The Geography Bee club meets Mondays from 2:45 to 4:00 in Mr. Hamilton’s room, Room 228. Students from all grades are welcome to attend. The club has a mix of boys and girls from grades 5 through 8.
News
Chief Akagi Speaks to RMS Students
Chief Akagi assured students that the Oak Ridge Schools and the Police Department are working very hard together, coordinating and exchanging information to insure the safety of every student. As his top priority, he made a pledge to do anything and everything he can to keep students safe.
He strongly advised students that this is not the time to make jokes because he and his officers are going to take every bit of information they receive very seriously, investigate, and aggressively prosecute parties involved.
Most importantly, he implored students to ask questions and to report anything threatening they come across. Akagi said, "It's real simple guys, if you see something or hear something you've got to say something. We're here for you."
SUCCESS STARTS HERE WALL
Right inside our front doors, you will find our Success Starts Here Wall. The vision of our school is the success of every student. What better way to inspire our current student body than a full display of success from Rams who used to walk our halls and sit in our very seats? On the wall you will find shadow boxes filled with accomplishments Rams have had since leaving RMS. Teachers, West Point graduates, business owners, bankers, SEC coaches, professional welders, Rhodes Scholars, etc. they all began their path of success here at Robertsville. The center box on the wall is the “What will fill yours?” box. Not only do we want to celebrate the success of our former students, our hope is that our students will see that success is meant for them as well. We will continue to add to the wall as we celebrate the success of Rams. Next time you are at Robertsville, be sure to take a look!

TE21
In order to meet the needs of every student and ensure mastery of standards, teachers want and need timely feedback on skills mastered by every student. As a result RMS has adopted a new set of benchmark assessments. TE21’s Benchmark Assessments are designed to gauge the academic progress of students and to provide timely feedback that can be used by teachers to guide instruction.
What TE21 offers:
1. Pacing Guides: CASE provides benchmarks based on standards checklists that are provided by the district or pacing guides developed by CASE curriculum experts. Our pacing guides are aligned to state standards.
2. Benchmark Assessments: Teachers administer benchmark assessments created by TE21’s CASE Assessments’ team. These assessments are formatted and designed to mirror state tests and are available for kindergarten through high school (including College/Career READY Assessment). Assessments may be administered online or paper/pencil.
3. Diagnostic Reports: Approximately 72 hours after assessments are administered, teachers and administrators can access our diagnostic reports. These reports help teachers and administrators identify individual student needs and plan intervention strategies.
4. Data Review: Our staff members are available to provide data review sessions for teachers/administrators on analyzing diagnostic data to ensure understanding of the diagnostic reports.
5. CASE Item Bank: The CASE Item Bank offers an easy-to-use way for teachers to create formative assessments using thousands of high-quality items written for state standards.
-----
We will conduct our second round of TE21 testing on Wednesday, March 7th.
