Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School

We're Already Thinking About Next Year!

Hello Gladiator Families,

It is only February, however, we are already preparing for next school year. Your Gladiator will bring home their course card on Thursday, February 18, for parents to discuss and review their course selections for the 16-17 school year. Course cards are due back to school on Tuesday, February 23rd. (This applies to current 6th & 7th graders only.) Students will enter their course selection into the computer on Friday, March 11th. (Click here to preview course card: .)

Our 8th graders have a slightly different time line for their high school registration. The high school counselors will present that information to our students on Monday, February 22nd. The course card is due back on February 29th to their PE teacher.

We have a new Academic Dean: Veronica Poblano. Mrs. Poblano is currently our math department coordinator/teacher. We will post her position and name her replacement within the next couple of weeks. Mrs. Poblano is an energetic and enthusiastic educator that continually looks for ways to grow and expand her knowledge. She will be a wonderful asset to the campus in her new role.

Have you seen SnapChat on your child's phone? Are you like me and not exactly sure what it entails? I have attached a Parent's Guide to Snapchat in this newsletter so we can all educate ourselves on what our teens are doing. (

February 15-19 is Kindness Week! The counselors have planned some great campus wide activities for the students and staff. The flyer is attached to the newsletter. The kindness videos that will be shown to students are attached as well for you to view. We are fortunate to have a counseling staff that takes the initiative to plan important character building activities for our students.

The staff appreciates the weekly treats provided by PTA and parents. This week we all enjoyed a wide variety of desserts and drinks. We are so fortunate to have a supportive community!

It's a GREAT day to be a Gladiator!

Champions of the Heart

Just days before winning the North Zone basketball tournament, Hector Garcia Middle School’s 8th Grade A Basketball team showed their hearts are as big as their game. On February 2, members of the HGMS team attended a Kinetic Kids basketball session to drill, practice and scrimmage with a group of children with disabilities. Kinetic Kids is a local, nonprofit organization that provides sports opportunities to children with special needs.

Both the Kinetic Kids team and the Garcia team spent the evening laughing, competing, talking, running, riding, coaching, shooting and rebounding. More importantly, they made friends and memories. According to HGMS guard Cole Cervantes, “It was so much fun hanging out with the Kinetic Kids. They were a blast to be around.”

Three nights later when the Garcia team stepped onto the court for the district championship, members of the Kinetic Kids basketball team were in the stands ready to cheer for their favorite middle school team. After spotting their newest fans, Jordan Wood, an HGMS shooting gaurd, said they were, “definitely an inspiration for us. We couldn’t let them down."
