How Will We Communicate With Families?
Obviously, if you are reading this we know we can communicate with you. Please rest assured that as the days and weeks go by, SHS staff will be engaging in rigorous efforts to reach out to all families that don't reach out to us. You can help out by sharing information that we provide, especially to families you know may not have access to any form of electronic communication. We are in this together and we could really use your help with communication!
When Does Continuous Learning Start?
Now that we know school buildings are closed for the rest of the year, SHS staff has been hard at work to create a new plan for learning for the rest of the year. This plan has been finalized and will become available to students the week of April 13. See below for more details!
What Will Learning Look Like?
What Schedule Should My Student Follow?
7th/8th Grade students should expect work that amounts to approximately 1 hour per class each week.
HS students should expect work that amounts to approximately 1.5 hours per class each week.
Teachers are fully prepared to provide additional enrichment learning activities for students who would appreciate such opportunities. Students/parents should reach out directly to individual teachers with such requests.
Does This Learning "Count"?
How Is This Learning Being Assessed? Is It Being Graded?
Students who engage in their learning and communicate with their teachers will almost certainly receive Credit, which will allow them to move on to the next grade level and/or the next course within a subject. Teachers will be taking into account individual student/family circumstances as it pertains to the level of student engagement. There is no "one-size-must-fit-all" approach being used.
Students that do not engage, or engage very minimally, will not receive credit for the learning that is being provided. Such students will need to participate in Summer School (when such a thing is possible) and/or Credit Recovery so that they may earn their credits in that manner.
Obviously, it is the goal of SHS that EVERY STUDENT is able to participate in their learning and earn their credits during this time. SHS is going to make every reasonable attempt to assist families who may be experiencing challenges during this time, particularly challenges in accessing the learning. But students and parents must understand that participation at this time should not be considered optional.
What If My Student Has A Disability?
How Can We Communicate With Teachers And The School?
In addition to normal email responses, each teacher is creating "office hours". These office hours will be communicated through Google Classroom as well as on the paper packets. Office hours will be handled differently by each teacher, but the purpose of office hours is to provide a time during each week that parents/students can expect timely feedback.
What About The Seniors?
Can I Come To The School To Pick Up My Student's Belongings?
If a student has something in their locker that is ESSENTIAL FOR LEARNING, parents may contact Mr. Carlson at scarlson@sandusky.k12.mi.us to schedule a time to pick this up. Please note that students will not be allowed into the building, just the parents.
