September 2019 Newsletter
Welcome (or welcome back)!
I wanted to take a minute to welcome our Eagle Scholars and their parents to another school year. Some bold thoughts to keep in mind:
Fear and excitement feel the same in the body. You are probably feeling a little of both. That's normal.
Change is not easy for most people. Whether it's a new school, a new grade, a new teacher, a new curriculum, or a new group of friends, it will take some time before you feel comfortable. And right when you start to feel comfortable, something will change.
When you struggle this year, know that there are people around you to help. In fact, many of us are paid to help you. Whether it's a teacher, a counselor, a social worker, or an administrator, someone has the expertise to help you through whatever you're facing, or at least direct you to someone who does.
You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If you want to be a better person, look around you. If your friends are not trying to be better, find some new friends.
You can choose to let the world happen to you or you can happen to the world. Schedule mixups, difficult teachers, challenging courses, negative friends--you can let those dictate your mood or you can choose to dictate your own mood. Be a thermostat, not a thermometer.
Can't wait to see you all on the first day!
Profiles in Awesomeness
Mahalia Hill (class of 2020)
For the next year, she will receive intense mentorship, will perform at many events across the state, and will facilitate workshops for youth writers. Amazingly, at the end of next year, she will publish a book of her work!
Congratulate her if you see her - it's a big accomplishment and took a ton of work!
Kaemon Tijerina (class of 2025)
