- The initial purpose of the Kansas–Nebraska Act was to open thousands of new farms.
Gettysburg
- The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863.
- It was fought around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War.
- Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia had lost ending Lee's attempt to invade the North.
Fredericksburg
- The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought December 11–15, 1862.
- It was fought in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia.
- The Union Army's futile frontal attacks on December 13 against entrenched Robert E. Lee's Confederate defenders.
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was a presidential proclamation.
It was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.
It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten states that were still in rebellion, except a couple areas controlled by the Union.
