Memorial Day Holiday
Reminder: All Pennsbury schools and offices will be closed this Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day, a time to remember and honor those who bravely fought for our country and gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Pennsbury Wall of Honor Ceremony
The proud Pennsbury tradition of honoring fallen American heroes with ties to the district returned to its annual in-person ceremony today at Pennsbury High School West. Pennsbury Wall of Honor Ceremony is traditionally held the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend. Last year, due to Covid, the ceremony was held virtually. Click here to read more.
Pennsbury High School Best Buddies Friendship Walk
The Pennsbury High High School Best Buddies program held its 2nd annual friendship walk this past Saturday at Falcon Field, raising over $3,000. Approximately 100 people registered for the event, which is the leading walk in the country supporting inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (also known as IDD).
Funds raised at the Friendship Walks help support the local Best Buddies program. PHS is currently ranked 6th in fundraising in the Philadelphia region.
Best Buddies empowers the special abilities of people with IDD by helping them form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public speaking, self-advocacy and communication skills, and feel valued by society.
Congratulations to PHS Best Buddies President and senior Bridget Weed and faculty advisors Nicholas Ruggieri and Jacklyn Ward on their tremendous efforts to host this successful fundraiser!
Character Matters
"If not me, then who..." That was the message delivered to students at Afton Elementary School during a recent visit from the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF). TMF empowers veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations.
Jay Buselli, a local veteran and Travis Manion Ambassador, led students in a conversation about the elements of good character, focusing on kindness, self-regulation, judgment, and teamwork. He provided real-world examples of people displaying the character strengths they discussed. Several students volunteered to get up in front of their peers and define the different character traits discussed.
From the Travis Manion Foundation:
"In 2007, 1st Lt Travis Manion (USMC) was killed in Iraq while saving his wounded teammates. Today, Travis' legacy lives on in the words he spoke before leaving for his final deployment, "If Not Me, Then Who..." Guided by this mantra, veterans continue their service, develop strong relationships with their communities, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper, and the character of our nation's heroes lives on in the next generation."
Eleanor Roosevelt Runners Go For It!
The Eleanor Roosevelt Running Club recently hit the pavement, participating in two different events at the Sesame Place Classic - the one-mile race and a 5k. Each One-Mile Race athlete finished the event, with several capturing overall and age group awards. Ten youth runners, two coaches, and Dr. Tom Smith, Pennsbury Superintendent, represented Eleanor Roosevelt in the 5k event.
The co-ed team is comprised of 85 students, kindergarten through 5th grade. The students have been training for the past nine weeks, completing workouts varying in length and intensity. They are coached by Brian Doron, Jeanine Davis (faculty), Megan Bogan & Christen Baglieri (PTO), along with help from many parent volunteers.
This program teaches the kids more than just running, but how to be great student-athletes, teammates, and strong, confident kids.
"So many kids started this program with various social and emotional struggles. Through running and being a part of this program, they have really overcome many of those challenges they previously faced. With running, they have learned to channel their feelings in a positive and healthy way. As a coach, you always want to see your athletes run fast and have a great race, but when you coach young kids, seeing them develop & grow emotionally and socially is really what makes you most proud," said Megan Bogan.
One-Mile Race Results:
Stephen Colsher (3rd overall)
Graham Howe (1st age group)
Jackson Howe (3rd age group)
Braxton Ayala-Marth (2nd age group)
Ms.Urszula (3rd)
5k Results:
Coach Megan Bogan (2nd overall female)
Nolan Sokolowski (2nd age group)
Margot Bartolucci (3rd age group)
Zara Bartolucci (2nd age group)
Travis Razler (2nd age group)
Dr. Smith (2nd age group)
With over 160 runners representing Eleanor Roosevelt, the team also took home the Spirit Award.
"The support that the parents have shown this club is so tremendous. Many parents and siblings also participated in the event, along with staff members. Running is such a fun and healthy way to bring families together," said Coach Esmode.
Next up, the ER Running Club will tackle the Yardley Memorial Main Street Mile.
Armed Forces Day Celebration at Penn Valley
On Friday, May 20, the students and staff of Penn Valley Elementary School welcomed some special guests from various branches of the military in honor of Armed Forces Day. These guests were treated to a continental breakfast, followed by an all-school celebration assembly. Each grade level performed songs to celebrate the different branches of the military. Members of the Pennsbury High School AFJROTC proudly represented their school and presented the colors. They, along with other PHS students shared their future plans to join the military. This event was a special opportunity for Penn Valley to thank the members of our community who have served our country. Thank you to guidance counselor Arlene Johnson for putting the event together.

PHS Students Place Third in Global Stock Pitch Competition
The Pennsbury High School Business, Computers, and Information Technology Department would like to announce that Jessica Firestone and Brady Burgfechtel placed 3rd in the Young Investors Society Global Stock Pitch Competition last Friday in Salt Lake City, Utah!
In this competition, students are challenged to analyze a public company and demonstrate why they believe its stock is a good buy. The students use the company's financial statements and the knowledge gained in their Wealth Management & Financial Literacy Honors class to complete their analysis before pitching the stock to a panel of investment professionals.
Overall, they competed against 317 teams in the U.S. and around the world. Jessica and Brady won a combined $1,500 as well as opportunities for internships through numerous investment firms. Congratulations, Jessica and Brady!
Lendo Fellowship Award Breakfast at PHS
This morning at Pennsbury High School, this year's recipients of the Lendo Fellowship were invited to attend a congratulatory breakfast and hear from Dr. Arthur Lendo himself virtually. The Lendo Fellowship was established in 2006 to support current PHS students in their academic and co-curricular pursuits. This award gives students the opportunity to participate in Pennsbury-endorsed activities and programs they may not have been able to otherwise. We would like to thank Dr. Lendo for his continued generosity, and congratulate our awardees!
