Let's Talk SEL
What are social-emotional skills?
Social-emotional skills are the strategies one has for managing strong emotions, navigating relationships, working effectively with others, solving difficult problems, and making responsible decisions.
Social-emotional skills pave the way for positive life experiences. When these skills are taught and supported, youth are more likely to succeed academically and have a positive attitude toward self and school. They are less likely to experience emotional distress and more likely to make good decisions.
Where and when are they used?
Social-emotional skills are needed and used from early childhood through adulthood. There is never a time they aren’t needed. We use these skills many times a day, navigating sibling and parent-child relationships, friendships, social and academic situations at school, our jobs, and anything we do in our communities. We need them for in-person interactions and even when communicating by phone or email.
For example, if a friend texts me about having an extremely bad day, I use my skills for empathizing when responding to her. If I don’t recognize and acknowledge her feelings and instead tell her to “toughen up,” I may not keep that friend. The same is true for our students! SEL teaches healthy ways to communicate and get along.

Healthy New Year’s Resolutions for Kids (and Adults too!)
Let’s welcome in 2021 on a healthy, positive note. Here are some simple New Year’s
Resolutions that the whole family can partake in. Pick 1, 2, or all of them!
I will brush my teeth twice a day.
I will drink more water and milk, and limit soda and fruity drinks.
I will always wear a helmet when bicycling or skateboarding.
I will wear my seatbelt every time I get in the car.
I will always wash my hands before eating and after using the restroom.
I will get up and move by playing, dancing, doing a sport, and just having fun for at least 30 minutes a day.
I will apply sunscreen before going outdoors.
I will always be kind to animals, I won’t tease them.
I will eat breakfast every day to fuel my body and my brain.
I will never give out personal information or pictures of myself to strangers over the internet.
I will be kind to others.
I will remind myself daily that I am my own, unique, important, special self!

Building Reading Comprehension
Being able to read does not mean you understand what you read. Your child might sound like a good reader but not necessarily understand what the text means. The best way to develop understanding is to talk about the text. Try helping your child by:
Discussing how to find information on the page
Being able to find information that is not on the page
Looking for clues/evidence to support their understanding
Helping them think about situations and predict what might happen next
Encouraging them to put themselves in a character’s shoes to understand what is going on from the character’s viewpoint
Talking about new words and their meanings
*If your child does not yet read independently, you can still do all of the above when you read aloud to them.
Math is EVERYWHERE!
Here are a few ways you can practice math with your child at the grocery store. The following activities range in difficulty. Have your child:
Count out apples or other items
Go on a shape hunt
Estimate and then check how much items weigh
Read labels and compare serving sizes
Compare prices to see the better deal
Estimate the total cost of the bill
Calculate the tax
Tell you how much to buy when you give them recipe/family needs
The most important way we can support our children’s success is to talk positively about math and avoid phrases like, “It’s okay, math is hard. I was never good at math either.” We mean well, but this only leads to an increase in math anxiety and reduces their willingness to persevere through difficult problems. Looking for ways to bring awareness to math in our daily lives will help your child not only practice their skills but gain confidence in their abilities.
