Great Stone Face Award
A NH award program for grades 4-6
What is the Great Stone Face Award?
The purpose of the award is to promote reading enjoyment, to increase awareness of contemporary writing, and to allow children to honor their favorite authors.(from NHLA)
Each year a committee chooses 20 recently published titles, which children then use as a guide for voting. The vote takes place every April during National Library Week, and the winner is announced in May. (see their brochure here)
What is the Great Stone Face Award at KES?
Near the end of the school year, the students were introduced to the program and encouraged to try some titles over the summer. Our amazing public library partners with us and purchases the same titles we choose so that students have a chance to read over the summer as well as providing more access for our students during the school year. Students make a personal goal of how many they would like to try to read.
My goal is to read one of the books to each class, and I encourage the classroom teachers to try to read one to the class as well, so that reading five for each student is not a difficult goal.
In April, those who have read at least five titles vote for their favorite book. Students all around the state vote, and all the votes are submitted to the CLNH organization who then announces the winner in May. At KES, we celebrate finding out the winner with a special picnic and prizes!
