Saint Catharine of Siena, pray for us.
Catholic Schools Week Opening Mass
From One Wildcat to Another...
As we enter week #23 and approach our 100th day of school during these unprecedented times, I wholeheartedly thank you for working together to adhere to the health and safety plan of Saint Catharine of Siena. I am hopeful of good things on the horizon. What a glorious day it will be when we can ALL be together!
Please remember that we have a good plan in place and it will only work if we all work together. It is imperative that you continue to monitor ALL of your family members for symptoms of Covid-19, which include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, the new loss of taste or smell, congestion or runny nose, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If your child, or ANYONE in your household, is having ANY of these symptoms, please keep your child(ren) home from school and immediately report symptoms to your family’s primary care physician, as well as school officials.
True to Catholic Schools Week Tradition, a snowstorm presented us with two days out of the building. Thank you to all who enthusiastically participated in our adapted drop-off and dismissal commuter line fun. Your positive support resulted in very smooth morning drop-offs and dismissals this week. Thank you.
Our service project for Opportunity House has been postponed to this week and Cohort 1 will celebrate their Chik-fil-A Day Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Please pack a lunch for your student if you did not order Chik-fil-A this time.
During the upcoming week, our students in both cohorts will be participating in a school-wide service project for Opportunity House. Our students will be making 200 bagged lunches. 100 bagged lunches will be collaboratively put together from each cohort Tuesday and Thursday.
Each class has a special part in putting this all together. PreK-Grade 2 decorated lunch bags with smiley faces, hearts, and happy pictures. Grades 2 through 4 put smile stickers on bags of cookies, chips, and water bottles. Grades 7 and 8 will make the ham and cheese sandwiches. And finally, grades 5 and 6 will fill the bagged lunches with sandwiches, water, chips, and cookies and prepare for delivery to Opportunity House.
Fourth and First Graders have been diligently working on their wax museum projects (grade 4) and Saint's projects (grade 1). These will be ready for viewing once all are completed and recorded, and spliced together for your viewing.
Enrollment is open for the 2021-2022 school year. We look forward to having your students back with us and are hopeful we will all be together. This early enrollment process is imperative to Saint Catharine of Siena because it helps us determine an enrollment figure for classroom size, ordering of textbooks, school supplies, etc. Please note, several classes had active waitlists for the 2020-2021 school year, and we expect the same to be true for the 2021-2022 school year. Priority will be given to current school families who re-enroll by the due date. Please remit your forms by January 29, 2021.
We thank you for choosing Saint Catharine of Siena and for your positive support of the mission of Saint Catharine of Siena School and Catholic education. We appreciate your collaboration and partnership in your student's education.
It is our continued hope and prayer that we can be together soon. Thank you for all you do today, tomorrow, and always. Saint Catharine of Siena, pray for us.
Air high fives to all,
Mrs. Marcella Kraycik

Ash Wednesday, February 17, 2021
The Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments asked priests to take special anti-COVID-19 precautions this year when distributing ashes on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, including sprinkling ashes on the top of people's heads rather than using them to make a cross on people's foreheads. Sprinkling ashes on the top of people's heads, rather than marking foreheads with ashes, is the customary practice at the Vatican and in Italy.
Inclement Weather and Snow Days
If inclement weather or some other emergency necessitates a school delay and/or closing, it will be announced on TV and radio, posted on the school website (www.scsreading.org), and sent out via the emergency communication system (Option C) and Facebook. Late arrivals and early dismissals will be announced through Option C.
Transportation is based on the school districts’ schedules. In the event that Saint Catharine of Siena School is open and the public school districts are experiencing a delay, the parent may provide transportation or follow the school district transportation schedule.

From Mrs. Miller, the School Nurse...updated 1.8.2021
*Please read the following information carefully and in its entirety.*
Dear SCS Parents and Guardians,
I hope that you and your families have had a beautiful and happy holiday season! As we forge on, with hope, into this New Year; I ask that you continue to keep in mind the health of our school community. I am grateful to those of you who have contacted our staff with updates to this point. I understand and appreciate the hardships that isolation and quarantine requirements present to families. You are playing a vital role in protecting others, and I cannot thank you enough for your honesty and selflessness.
Please continue to keep your child home and notify me or Mrs. Kraycik if
Your child or anyone in your household is displaying symptoms of illness (Please see attached list)
Anyone in your household is awaiting results of a Covid-19 test or has tested positive for Covid-19
Your child has been in contact with anyone displaying symptoms of illness
Anyone in your family has been in contact with someone who is awaiting results of a Covid-19 test or has tested positive for Covid-19
Your child has traveled outside of Pennsylvania
The SCS Pandemic Response Team continues to follow the most conservative guidelines outlined by the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health. We are committed to doing so in order to safeguard the health of the members of our school community, all extended family members, and the greater community. This remains our top priority.
I pray that the New Year brings peace, hope, and comfort to each of you and your families; and I thank you again for your cooperation as we move forward.

Dismissal Commuter Line Update
Thank you to all who have been adhering to our dismissal policies and procedures. We are grateful to you.
Because the "big" buses have been arriving earlier than expected, the bus riders are being dismissed first to avoid "clogging" 23rd street. Feel free to NOT enter the lot until after 2:45 pm to avoid idling in the car line.
With the winter season approaching, the possibility of inclement weather increases. Although we do our best to keep our lot cleared of snow and ice, we ask you to practice these safety items:
- Keep speed to a minimum
- Keep a social distance between cars coming down 24th street.
- Keep a larger social distance between vehicles driving up the scary hill towards 23rd street.
- Continue to wait until a staff member directs you up the hill. We wait until all students in the 23rd bus line are "in the clear" before sending vehicles up the hill.
Thank you for all you do to keep our students safe during dismissal.

Lunches
We encourage the packing of nut-free lunches this year. Due to COVID restrictions, the students are eating in various places around our campus. They are dining either in classrooms, the cafeteria, or alfresco if weather permits.
A nut-free table is not available this year. Therefore, we are asking that nut-free lunches and snacks be brought to school this year. We thank you for your support and your respectful cooperation in this matter.
The cafeteria will be serving a limited menu if the lunch service is needed. The EVER POPULAR meatball sub is back! Yum!
Scrip Volunteers Needed, please.
We are looking for a volunteer to sell SCRIP for the 2nd Sunday of every month, 1st shift (7:15am - 10:15a.m). If you are looking to volunteer, but your time is limited, this is a great option! You will sell 12x a year, and if you need a sub for a month off or want to switch a shift during any month, simply reach out to the other sellers!

Box Tops for Education
No more clipping. No more sending Box Tops to school. All you need is your phone. Download the ALL-NEW Box Tops app, shop as you normally would, then simply scan your store receipts to find participating products. The app will automatically credit your school's Box Tops earnings online.
You can still clip them and send them to school. Physical Box Top clips are being phased out of production, but may continue to be found on many products throughout the store. Send your clipped Box Tops, along with any unexpired clips you may have at home, to SCS.
Twice a year, your school will receive a check and can use that cash to buy whatever it needs!
