Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! We are so looking forward to the return of our students. With our new schedule and courses, it is going to be an exciting and innovative school year.
Our first newsletter is meant to provide you with all the important information for the upcoming school year. However, if you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to call our main office at 267-893-3400.
Please be reminded of the many ways that students can get involved at Unami. We strongly encourage all of our students to explore our many extracurricular opportunities, including music groups, athletics, student council, along with many different academic and service clubs. If students are planning on participating in a fall sport, they must register on Family ID and complete CIPPE form section 5 & 6 dated after June 1, 2017 and signed and stamped by a doctor.

WHO WANTS TO BE LINKED IN UNITY?!
Throughout the year, and especially in Unami United Advisory, we support our students as they learn to find their voice and "stand up" for themselves and others. Once our students leave Unami and go on to CB South High School, building student advocacy is continued and broadened through a program called "First LINK." As a part of LINK's service outreach, those South students work with our Unami students to foster community building and servant leadership. We call this "Link to Unity" or L2U for short.
We will have our first L2U on Saturday, November 11th for all interested 8th and 9th graders who have not been linked before. To receive an invitation to L2U, students (or parents, guardians, teachers) need to fill out a quick nomination form. We will send invitations based on nominations in late October. That means we need nominations by October 20. Students who return the signed permission form first will be the ones who are admitted to L2U.
L2U starts at 8:30 and ends at 11 a.m. Being that it is an action and learning packed two-and-a half hours, students must commit to attending the entire session (no leaving early). Participation is free and student participants get a L2U t-shirt at the end.

GYM UNIFORM AND LOCKS
All students must wear a CB or old (UMS) gym uniform for their Physical Education classes. Uniforms and locks will be able to be purchased online through our My Payments Plus program. The cost of uniform items and locks for the 2017-2018 school year are as follows:
- Gym Lock $5.70
- Gym Shirt $2.40
- Gym Shorts $4.20
All clothing should be labeled with a permanent marker. If for some reason you are not able to purchase them online, you will have to write a check out to Unami Middle School for $12.30 for all three items. Please include your student's name on the memo line. These will be collected in gym class. Please note, if your student does not have gym until second semester, they can still purchase the items needed online and they will receive their uniform and lock the first day of their gym class in the second semester.
CB MIDDLE SCHOOLS ARE NOW USING 'MY PAYMENTS PLUS'
CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Towards the purpose of putting learning first, we ask that Unami parents be aware of and support our 2017-2018 school year Electronic Device Policy. An abridged version of the policy is described below; the full policy can be found on Unami's web page or by clicking the following link:
Unami Middle School Electronic Device Policy.
Our policy seeks to maintain the integrity of an academic environment, protect personal property, respect personal privacy, and ensure students are not accessing CBSD prohibited websites while in school.
Student Responsibility:
Electronic devices should be powered "off" and stored in the student's respective locker during the school day.
Students may only bring personal electronic devices to class if explicitly directed by the teacher and only used for the assignment(s) set forth by the teacher.
If feeling ill, students should request to see the nurse. Students should not text or call parents to pick them up if feeling ill.
Student Consequences for Violation of the Policy:
First Offense - 1 hour after school detention;
Second Offense - 2 hour after school detention;
Third Offense - 3 hour after school detention (to be served as 1.5 hour detentions on 2 separate days) and parent conference.
Parent Support:
Please refrain from texting or calling students during the school day. If there is an emergency and you need to reach your child immediately, contact the front office at 267-893-3400.
Please refrain from communicating with students about illness through text or cell phone during school hours. Students should request to see the nurse if they feel ill. The nurse will then make parent contact when needed.
We appreciate the support of our students and parents as our students "unplug" from these devices and focus on learning. Thank you!!
Appropriate School Dress
We are asking parents to assist us in ensuring that students are dressing appropriately for school. Students are not permitted to wear inappropriate clothing, which includes strapless or backless dresses, shorts or skirts that are above mid-thigh length, clothing that exposes the midriff/undergarments, or clothing containing questionable messages or pictures.
Hats/hoods/bandanas are not considered appropriate attire during the school day. Students may wear hats to and from school but they must be placed in the hall locker before homeroom and remain there until dismissal.
Students who are inappropriately dressed for school will be directed to comply by using gym apparel or items in the student's locker. If the student has no other clothing, the office will issue clean gym apparel to be worn for the day, which is to be returned to school washed the following day. More specifics of our school dress code policy can be found on our district webpage, or by clicking here. Students who repeatedly violate CB's dress code policy will be issued after-school disciplinary detentions.
MICROSOFT 365
Students all have access to Office 365 from school, home, and anywhere where they have wifi connectivity. Office 365 provides MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook to our students to use for school. By using this platform, students will be able to access these powerful educational tools both in and out of school. Students have been given individual accounts and log in information as well as expectations of appropriate, school-related use. This will also ensure student safety and the expectation is that all students will use the CB email accounts through Office 365 Outlook to communicate with their teachers. Click here for more detailed information on Office 365
REMINDER: STUDENT ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES
For supervision and safety reasons, students may not be dropped off at school before 7:05 a.m. If you are driving your student to school and arrive before 7:05 a.m., please remain in your car with your student until 7:05 a.m.
MORNING DROP-OFF LINE
Many mornings Unami experiences a very long drop-off line that can lead to students arriving late. To alleviate this morning congestion, we ask that parents pull the whole way around the “drop-off circle” rather than stopping at bus platform door. Students may enter the building through both the office door (by the Unami sign) and the bus door after 7:15 a.m. when most drop-offs occur.
We thank you for your cooperation.
SCHOOL LUNCHES
School lunches may be purchased for the following prices for the 2017-2018 school year:

Please be reminded that students may not carry any form of medication. This includes over the counter medication. If your child has any medication needs, please complete a medication dispensing form. Blank medication dispensing forms are available here.
Student physicals and dental examinations are state mandated and required for all new students in all grades. Dental examinations are required for all students entering grade 7. School forms for these examinations were sent home in the spring from your child's elementary school. If you require another blank form, please click here. Having up to date and accurate medical information about our students ensures that we respond appropriately to medical needs students present while in school. Please contact our school nurse if these examinations present a family economic hardship, as the school can provide assistance.
Parent Portal
Through this secure online tool, parents have access to information about their student(s). Parents are ableto view their student's attendance record, schedule, assessment data, interim progress reports, report cards, immunization records and family demographic information like address and phone numbers. The parent portal has proven to be very popular and helpful. Go to the Unami or any district website and click on the portal icon near the top of the page. Click here to view Parent Portal tips and frequently asked questions (you may also apply for an Activation Key here).
If you (or someone you know) does not know how to get into the Portal, please click here and follow the directions under "Portal Help." The Portal is an important tool for parents and guardians. Throughout the year you can use the Portal to view current grades, attendance, immunizations, state assessment scores, and more. This is also where you can update your email address and phone number as well as emergency contact information for your student.
Your student also has their own access to the Portal. Students should click here for an informational screencast to learn how to access the Portal. The screen-cast can help both parents and students access the Portal by smart phone.
You can also keep up to date by going to each teacher’s website for classroom information. Just go to the Teacher Websites link on the Unami website.
If you do not have access to a computer for this information, please contact the teacher. Phone numbers and email addresses are also available on Unami's Staff Page.
To access your son/daughter’s report card:
Log onto the Parent Portal: https://campus.cbsd.org/campus/portal/cbsd.jsp.
Click on REPORTS on the left-hand menu.
