February Newsletter

Dear Parents,

With February already upon us we hope all of our returning students and new members of the IIS family have settled in and are enjoying being back at School. Despite this month being the shortest of the year, it is packed with events. First, we celebrate Chinese New Year and shortly after, the day of love - Valentine's.

This month at IIS both Mini Molly, the mobile library bus and our friends from the NUS social club from will be paying us a visit to spend quality time with our students. We also have our first excursion of the year scheduled on Monday 22 February. Specific details will be e-mailed out closer to the date.

Let's start with Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year (農曆新年, Nónglì Xīnnían), also known as the Lunar New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. This year, we celebrate the year of the monkey, specifically the red monkey. You will thus notice that decorations of monkeys are almost everywhere you go at the moment. If you are keen on teaching your children about Chinese New Year, then the two following activities in China Town may be of interest to the whole family:

Two Colorful & Cultural Things to do In Singapore during Chinese New Year

Besides going from house to house to visit relatives and friends, there is much you can do before or after the actual day, as the Lunar New Year spans across a total of 15 days:

1. Light display in China Town

Every year, during Chinese New Year, we are treated to stunning light displays in Chinatown.

Chinatown is all ready to stun with colorful décor to usher in the Year of the Monkey. Apart from your usual red and gold lanterns, Chinatown makes sure to stimulate the eyes with thematic displays. Of course, this means we are going to see lots of monkeys this year.

Where: New Bridge Road & Eu Tong Sen Street

2. Embark on A Chinatown Walking Trail

During Chinese New Year, the bazaars come alive. Each free-for-all trail walk is conducted in English, and limited to 10 participants.

When: 23, 24, 30 & 31 January 2016
Time: 3.30pm – 5pm

Will you be my Valentine?

While we hope that all our mummy and daddy couples get to spend some well deserved "alone time" on the 14th, Valentine's is not just for couples. Valentine's is a day to show one another how much we love and appreciate each other.

So, get the kids involved. At IIS, we believe in a culture of appreciation and kindness. So to celebrate Valentine's, our students will be writing or making each other letters/cards of appreciation. At home, you can continue this culture by starting a unique family Valentine’s Day tradition. Incorporate one special activity which you can do consistently each year on the 14th of February. Some ideas include giving out heart-shaped chocolates or a special note to each other, or preparing a family meal together.

School Happenings

The cool "Mini Molly" mobile library bus is coming back! Mini Molly visited us last month on 24 January 2016, bearing more than 1500 books! Our eager readers enjoyed their time on Molly immensely!

Molly returns on the 27 February. Help us remind students to bring their library cards to loan more awesome books.
