Science Fair Showcases Talents of Jefferson Students

This year's Science Fair was another tremendous success, and Jefferson students have a lot about which they should be proud. Overall there were 44 student participants presenting 28 Science Fair projects. Of those 28 projects, 13 have advanced to the Regional Competition at MSU, Mankato, on Saturday, April 28. Parents who registered their students should have received an email. If you are a parent who expected an email and did not get one, please contact Ms. Clauson at Jefferson, and she will forward the information to you.

A HUGE thank you to all our volunteer judges and to all the families who supported our students through this process and came to Jefferson to view the final products!

April Jaguar Jam!

As you all know by now, the first Friday of every month during the school year features a new way for us to celebrate positive behavior choices at Jefferson. During each Jaguar Jam we recognize students who earned JAGS Spotlight awards the previous month, set a positive behavior focus for the coming month, and have a little fun, too. At our April "Jam" we recognized 29 JAGS Spotlight winners from the month of March, introduced this month's focus of "A Bug and a Wish", and learned about the importance of using non-confrontational language when trying to resolve a dispute with a classmate.

5th Grade Wax Museum - Historical Success

On the afternoon of Thursday, April 12, Jefferson 5th grade students culminated research projects with "Wax Museum" style presentations. Our students poured hours of effort into researching and preparing these impressive presentations, and large crowds of students and families enjoyed the fruits of their labor on this afternoon. Check out the awesome photos of many of the historical figures below.

Testing Season!

Every school year, during the months of April and May, students all across the state of MN participate in MCA testing. MCA stands for the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments. The Minnesota Dept. of Education website offers a tremendous amount of information about testing. Here are the answers they provide to two of the most frequently asked questions around MCA testing.

What is the MCA? The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) are state tests in reading, mathematics, and science that are used to meet federal and state legislative requirements. The tests are administered every year to measure student performance relative to the Minnesota Academic Standards that specify what students in a particular grade should know and be able to do.

Why do we give these tests? We use the MCA to find out how well schools have aligned curriculum to and instructed students in the Minnesota Academic Standards in reading, mathematics, and science. The reading and mathematics assessments are also used in federal and state accountability measurements. Schools use the information to improve classroom teaching and learning. Teachers and principals look for areas where students do well so they can reinforce the ways they teach these skills. They also look for areas that need improvement so they can increase instructional time or modify their instruction.

Jefferson Testing Schedule:

3rd Grade: MCA Reading (Apr. 18 & Apr. 19) MCA Math (Apr. 24 & Apr. 25)

4th Grade: MCA Reading (Apr. 16 & Apr. 17) MCA Math (Apr. 23 & Apr. 26)

5th Grade: MCA Reading (Apr. 24, 25, & 26 ) MCA Math (May 1 & May 2)
