2016 PARCC Results
Students in third, fourth, and fifth grades take the PARCC assessment (Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Career) in English/Language Arts and Mathematics each spring. This past May marked the third administration of the new PARCC assessment. Overall, students at L.E.S. performed well. In English/Language Arts, 54% of students in grades three through five met or exceeded expectations. In Mathematics, 61% of our students met or exceeded expectations. While we are very proud of our accomplishments, we are striving to continually improve from last year. We are working hard to help all of our students meet or exceed the expectations in the coming year.

FROM THE HEALTHROOM
If you have completed and returned a Flu Clinic consent form for your child to receive the injectable vaccine on October 17th, please take a moment and consider a few suggestions to help them prepare.
To help minimize distress at the time of the vaccination please speak with your child about it prior to the clinic. Here are a few strategies and examples of how you can answer their questions and alleviate fears:
- Speak with your child about what will happen: "you will get a medicine called a vaccine in the arm with a needle"
- Tell them why the vaccine is being given: "to keep healthy which helps keep your baby sister/grandparent etc. healthy"
- If they ask tell them how it will feel: "there may be a pinch and some pushing or pressure that last a few seconds (very quick)"
If your child has already received the vaccine and you have turned in a consent form for the school clinic, PLEASE notify the Health Room at 301-475-0250.
Allergy season is back again. One way to characterize it is: "Reactive Airway" season.
If your child has a diagnosis of Asthma- whether it's exercise induced, chronic asthma or viral triggered asthma, this is a good time of year to review your inhaler orders and have an inhaler available wherever the airways may happen to become reactive. Plan to include the inhaler on all field trips regardless of the type of asthma....better safe than sorry! Please call the nurse if you have any questions about your child's asthma plan. 301-475-0250 x31106 or lmwilliams@smcps.org
Some additional tips for seasonal allergies:
- Shower in the evening to rinse pollen away before bedtime.
- Change your pillowcase daily to avoid lying on pollen all night.
- Wash face and hands after going outdoors.
- Change your clothes immediately after finishing outdoor play and send the pollen to the washing machine.
- Drink extra fluids to keep eyes and airways moist and working properly.
- Follow your doctor's plan for staying ahead of allergies.
