The Bear Necessities
James L. Collins Catholic School
From the Desk of Mrs. Hoyer
I would like to express my gratitude for your generous support of the parish festival. A healthy sense of competition was ignited among the students near the end of last week, and the result was simply amazing! JLCCS was able to donate over 2,000 sodas and bottles of water!! The second grade class earned a snow cone party and the 7th grade class a free dress day. I also want to thank all the parents for volunteering at the school booth, most especially the Reyes family who helped set up the day before then worked the booth all Sunday!
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Just as we used a Sign-up Genius for festival booth volunteer sign up, we will use it again to schedule parent/teacher conferences for Thursday, October 21st. You should receive an email from your child’s homeroom teacher in the next week or so inviting you to sign up for a time that you and your child can discuss his/her progress. (If possible, your child should attend the conference with you.)
IT’S A PARTY! IT’S A PARADE!
Next Tuesday, October 12th, JLCCS and members of Immaculate Conception parish will join Navarro College in commemorating its 75th anniversary with a parade through downtown Corsicana. With the assistance of the Art Club and the Jackson family, we will have a float featuring our Cheer Club members and more. If you would like to join us in representing JLCCS, please wear the school spirit shirt provided by PTC this year and jeans then meet us in the Brookshire’s parking lot at 5:15pm. Berny the Bear will also make an appearance. It’s sure to be a lot of fun!
FIELD TRIPS
We’re back to taking students on field trips this year as Mr. L’s 5th grade class has visited the Cook Center at Navarro College to enrich their knowledge of astronomy and Miss Briggs’ 4th grade class went to the local food bank making a connection to the character in their novel who experienced food insecurity. Future field trips include:
- Mrs. Aguilar and Mrs. Guzman will visit several locations around town with kindergarteners and first graders to learn about their community.
- Mrs. Whiteside will take 8th grade to the Confederate Reunion Grounds in Mexia to learn about Civil War life.
- Mrs. Gibbs’ and our 3rd graders will travel to the Cook Center.
REMEMBER!
Next week (October 11-15), we will be conducting our annual standardized testing. Please try to minimize absences that week and, if possible, reschedule appointments to the afternoon. Ensuring that your child has a good night’s sleep as well as a healthy breakfast will improve his/her performance. The results will be shared with you some time in November.
50s Day
This JLCCS tradition is right around the corner! To celebrate the 50th day of school, students and teachers will dress up like it’s the 1950s and enjoy some of the fun activities of that era such as root beer floats and a Sock Hop.

This series of kid-friendly books is being utilized by the Religion teachers to instruct students on St. John Paull II’s Theology of the Body. There will be a second meeting sometime after the first of the year during which she will inform those present about the impact of social media on youth today.
Be on the lookout for a flyer about Grandparents Day coming home in the family folder next week. Grandparents Day will be on October 27th from 12pm to 3pm. The day will include Trunk or Treat, BINGO, the Book Fair, snacks, photos, pumpkin decorating, and more!
