Astronomy Project 6.11
there will always be a diffrent phase of the moon
New Moon
The new moon is the beginning of the moon and it's phase's.
The new moon occurs about every 29 1/2 days.
Only on the times that this moon and the full moon occurs they cause a spring tide this occurs when the moon and the sun have a gravitational pull on the top and bottom halves of the earth
Full Moon
The full moon is the end of the cycle of moon phases. A full moon is the lunar phase that occurs when the Moon is completely illuminated as seen from the Earth. Only on the times that this moon and the new moon occurs they cause a spring tide this occurs when the moon and the sun have a gravitational pull on the top and bottom halves of the earth
A few more of our moon phases
1st quarter of the moon
Only on the times that this moon and the 3rd quarter moon occurs they cause a neap tide this occurs when the moon and the sun have a gravitational pull on either side of the earth
3rd quarter of the moon
Only on the times that this moon and the 1st quarter moon occurs they cause a neap tide this occurs when the moon and the sun have a gravitational pull on either side of the earth
waning gibbous moon
Is the 4th phase of the moon cycle. The waning gibbous moon, is defined to occur when the Moon appears to be more than one-half but not fully illuminated by direct sunlight. Because the fraction of the Moon’s disk that is illuminated is decreasing, we consider the Moon to be “waning.” Each new lunar cycle is measured beginning at each new moon and the waning gibbous moon occurs when the Moon is more than one-half but less than three-fourths of the way around the sky from new moon.
Waxing gibbous
The waxing gibbous moon, is defined to occur when the Moon appears to be more than one-half but not fully illuminated by direct sunlight. Because the fraction of the Moon’s disk that is illuminated is increasing, we consider the Moon to be “waxing.” Each new lunar cycle is measured beginning at each new moon and the waxing crescent moon occurs when the Moon is more than one-quarter but less than one-half of the way around the sky from new moon.
Waxing crescent
The waxing crescent moon is defined to occur when the Moon is nearly, but not precisely, on a line with the Earth and Sun. This means that part but less than one-half of the Moon is illuminated by direct sunlight, creating a crescent moon. Because the fraction of the Moon’s disk that is illuminated is increasing, we consider the Moon to be “waxing.” Each new lunar cycle is measured beginning at each new moon and the waxing crescent moon occurs when the Moon is less than one-quarter of the way around the sky from new moon.
Waning crescent
hat is a waning crescent moon? The waning crescent moon, sometimes called an old moon, is defined to occur when the Moon is nearly, but not precisely, on a line with the Earth and Sun. This means that part but less than one-half of the Moon is illuminated by direct sunlight, creating a crescent moon. Because the fraction of the Moon’s disk that is illuminated is decreasing, we consider the Moon to be “waning.” Each new lunar cycle is measured beginning at each new moon and the waning crescent moon occurs when the Moon is more than three-quarters of the way around the sky from new moon.
