SUPER HIGHLIGHTS:
It was a short week but action packed...
We continued to write small moment stories. Our students are really growing as readers and writers!
We saw a presentation called Milk Matters...How much sugar do you think is added to a
Hi-C juice box? a small can of soda? a pint of milk? a pint of chocolate milk?
We made moostaches and drank milkshakes!
In Farm and Fall we...made butter, did "egg"citing egg "egg"speriments, we sheared the shaving cream wool off our sheep, we learned about farm animals, milked a pretend cow, made Team Scarecrows, had pumpkin races, measured pumpkins, did leaf rubbings, did pumpkin math, learned about corn and took pictures with Farmer Jake!
LOOK AHEAD:
We will read and compare different version of The Little Red Hen. We will make tacos like in the story the Little Red Hen Gets Help.
We will learn about words with short e...en, et, ell
We will finish our Farm Animal unit.
We will have pumpkin centers on Friday . Students will rotate to each of the first grades and learn and write pumpkin facts, weigh and measure pumpkins, count pumpkin seeds, see if pumpkins sink or float and learn about the pumpkin life cycle.

On October 19th, we will be having a Taco Party. We will be reading all different versions of The Little Red Hen...In Little Red Gets Help...they make tacos. We need your help with ingredients so we can have A Taco Party.
On October 28th, we will have our Halloween Parade and Party. If you you wish to volunteer treats, please sign up here. We will limit sweet treats and do some fall favorites.
Halloween Parade Details...
On Friday, October 28th, Shoemaker Elementary will hold our
Halloween Celebration with a parade and classroom parties.
Parents are invited to join us at 1:30, for the parade.
Here are some costume and parade guidelines:
Please stand on the macadam street starting at the side of the building near the bus parking and circle around the front of the building to the playground. Please do not stand on the sidewalks so students can parade through these areas.
There is no theme for costumes this year; however, we are encouraging costume recycling or Team Theme or Superhero costumes. When selecting costumes please choose costumes that do not have weapons. Scary costumes are fine as long as they do not have weapons or extreme “blood and guts”.
Please allow yourself extra time getting to school because our parade will begin promptly at 1:30 and we don’t want you to miss your child! Kindergarten will lead the parade followed by first, second, third, fourth, and ending with fifth grade.
Parking will be scarce and part of the lot will be blocked off for the parade, so you may want to carpool with other families.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
I still do not have everyone's conference times...please sign up for November Conferences.

HOMEWORK HELPER
LITTLE READER: The Little Reader is in the Blue Shoemaker Folder...please keep the packet and booklet in the blue folder.
Students will have 1 week to complete and practice. Each week practice reading the book each day to build fluency. Complete any skill. Then write 2 to 5 sentences in the packet, draw and color a picture. For added practice have students reread their own writing. Students can write in kidwriting and you write the correct spelling above or below it or students can dictate and you write on a scrap piece for them to copy, or they write on a scrap piece, you correct and they recopy onto the packet.
Lastly, please write the title of the book and due date on the packet. It is due on Wednesdays. Please write me a note or e-mail if you can be our Little Reader Volunteer on Wednesdays. It is best to take the Little Reader out of the folder each week after you get a new book and keep in a folder or box for extra practice.
Sight Word Vocabulary Book: It is the off white booklet. Students have 1 week to practice the words. Students will write words and write a sentence in the book, practice reading the words and return on Fridays. The new list will be highlighted for the next week. You can make flash cards, have students write words or write words in shaving cream for extra practice. They do not need to know how to spell these words...only read them.
Please write me a note or text me if you would like to Volunteer to be the Vocabulary Volunteer on Fridays.
Kicking It Math: Addition flashcards will be sent home soon. Please cut the cards and have students practice learning the facts by heart. A practice packet will be sent home to use...feel free to make copies and practice as they move up the levels. I did not include every level in the packet...just a sampling. We will give Kicking math tests 2 to 3 times per week, as time allows. If students do not pass the level they will retake it. Students can miss 3 of 30 problems. They have 2 minutes to complete 30 problems.
Fluency Passages: Students will bring home Fluency Practice Passages, stories, sentences and poems. Please have students read and reread the passages each week to help develop fluency and expression. Please initial and return each week.
KINDNESS KORNER
Each month we will do ACTS of KINDNESS… please help in anyway you can…
In October, we are going to collect canned food. This will also be a canned food contest for the school. The classes will compete to see who can bring in the most canned goods. Let's try to bring at least 100 cans..if we each bring 4 or 5 cans we can reach our goal. The food will be taken to the Zionsville Food Pantry to help our own East Penn families. (Please remember to check the dates on the items sent in. Outdated food cannot be handed out at the food pantry.) Our collection will last until October 31st .
