Principal's Message
I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break!!! It was so nice to spend time with my family and recharge!
I am sending this newsletter early today because many of you had questions regarding the Zoom Meeting Update that needed to be done before tomorrow. There is another opportunity to do the Zoom Authentication test today from 1:00-6:00pm. Please see below for more information!
Don't forget that tomorrow, Monday, January 4th, we have a Material Pick-up for all students in all grades from 1:00-4:00pm.
Did you know that in Art, Music, and PE Class students discuss the concept of perspective, but in a way that makes sense with the particular content area? The special area classes are an integral part of the students’ day. For many students, these classes help to demonstrate some of their strengths and allow them to think and respond in different ways.
During this time of remote learning, your child is expected to attend one “live” class for art, music, and PE each week. Then, students are provided with an additional “independent” activity for each special. These activities are an extension of the live lessons and are meant to give students time to practice and apply the skills and concepts presented during the live sessions.
When students miss live instruction, the independent activities are far less meaningful, and students will likely find them frustrating and challenging to complete. Attendance and participation during the live classes and completion of the independent work are factors that impact your students’ learning and overall success. The Peterson Remote Learning Site (https://sites.google.com/ipsd.org/peterson-remote-learning-site-/home) has all of the specials’ live links listed. The classroom teachers talk with students about their schedule and provide reminders for them to attend. If you have any questions about specials, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Luhn, Mr. Mehta, Mr. Patterson, or me.
Best,
Alli Landstrom

Reminder: Action Needed for Zoom Update
In order to be prepared, we ask that you do several things. We are asking that students complete the first step this week.
1) Today, January 3rd, between 1:00-6:00pm, please have your child log into their Chromebook and click this link: Test Zoom Authentication. Teachers are also being asked to put this link in Google Classroom for each student so it is accessible. It will look like a Zoom room is opening, which is supposed to happen. Your child also may be asked to sign in. Once your child is in the Zoom meeting, a screen will pop up with some music. That's it! Then they can exit. This step must be completed so there is no issue for your child accessing Zoom after winter break.
2) At the end of each day, when the Chromebook is not in use, please have your child completely log off and shut it down properly. Closing the lid is not shutting it down. When updates are applied to the Chromebook the computer will not apply the updates unless it is shut down properly.
3) Once the authentication begins on January 4, the goal is for nothing to appear different for your child when they log into their Zoom rooms. If a student is using the district Chromebook, which they should be, it should work just as it is now. If a student is using a different device, they will be prompted to log into the SSO first.
Second Step
This month, our schoolwide theme is emotion management. In our morning announcements and through Second Step lessons, we’ll be prompting students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we’ll be reminding them to use their Second Step skills to calm down:
- Stop—Use your signal
- Name your feeling
- Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk
These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others.
Second Step lessons specifically teach about calming down strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety. You’ll be receiving Home Links that describe why managing strong emotions is important and include fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify strong feelings and calm down. We hope the Home Links will give you tools to use together when your child is upset.
Please contact us if you have questions about how you can help your child learn to calm down at home.

Tech Assistance for Chromebooks
The district continues to streamline the process for Chromebooks that need tech assistance. In order to meet the needs of our students with their technology needs, we are asking that if you have issues with your Chromebook, follow the new process below:
- The district asks that you use the Troubleshooting/Service Ticket Form to see if you can solve your issue with these troubleshooting directions. Most issues can be resolved following these steps.
- If you are unable to resolve your issue after following these directions, there is a form to fill out at the bottom of the troubleshooting document (link above) that will create a service ticket for your child's Chromebook.
- Once this form is filled out by you, someone from the district will be in contact with you about the issue.
- Please use an email address that you check frequently since this is the best way to contact you about the situation.
Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through this process.
