Res Weekly Update #7
The Way to Stay in Touch with All Things Res: 11/12 - 12/1
Weekly Grades, Finals Schedule & Room Reservations
Weekly Grades
Weekly grade reports are run on Friday morning each week. Teachers are required to update grades weekly and they need to be updated by Thursday evening (midnight) for the Friday morning report. We ask that teachers please stay out of their gradebooks from 9:45 - noon on Fridays so that an accurate report can be printed. Additionally, if we do not have school on Friday, please have grades for the week updated on Wed evening (midnight) so the report can be run Thursday morning. If you have any questions concerning SDS or grade submission, please contact Joe Lascon.

Instruction & Technology Updates
Aspire Test Information
Interim Aspire tests consists of what they label as "pretest" and "operational" test questions. The operational questions are different for each interim test (so Interim 1 has different operational questions than Interim 2, 3 and 4). However, the pretest questions are the same. The pretest questions make up about 25-30% of the test, so it is reasonable to presume that students will see some of the same questions. Additionally, the operational reading passages are different between the four interim tests, but the one pretest passage is the same.
WeVideo, along with Schoology, are by far the most commonly used Ed Tech tools utilized in our building. For this reason, anytime we receive an update of new features for either tool, it is worth mentioning it. WeVideo recently announced it "Essentials Library". Here is what WeVideo says about the new library:
"The Internet is supposed to put the world’s accumulated knowledge at your students’ fingertips. So why must young video creators waste 30 frustrating minutes in the wilderness searching for a ten-second clip of a spiral galaxy, only to then be told that they are violating someone’s copyright? With WeVideo Essentials™, that ends today! WeVideo Essentials is the tremendous new library of professionally-sourced assets—more than 450,000 photos, 115,000 video clips, and 110,000 audio clips—that WeVideo has added to every WeVideo for Schools account. The library also includes tons of backgrounds, illustrations, sound effects and more.
The WeVideo Essentials Highlights:
- No added cost for WeVideo for Schools accounts. That’s right, it’s all included!
- Safe, secure, walled searching
- All assets are licensed- and royalty-free—we support good digital citizenship
- Easy access directly within the WeVideo app that you know and love.
- Did we mention no added costs for pro assets that would cost thousands and thousands of dollars elsewhere!

Projects in the Innovation Lab
If you have assigned a project that utilizes tools from the Innovation Lab and/or the Digital Recording Studio, please email Dr. Megan Leider (Seminar A) or Josh Wiechert (Seminar B) the project details. They work to assist students in the Lab and knowing what they are supposed to be working on will help them.
Curriculum and Academics!
Video of the Week
Academics
D/F list - In order to facilitate several programs e.g. athletic, cheer, and Rankin, weekly grades MUST be submitted by 9:00 a.m. every Friday. Once your weekly grades are entered, please do not enter additional grades for 24 hours. Please reach out to your students on the D/F list and let them know of resources that are available. These resources include requesting an NHS tutor, getting extra help in the think tank, and meeting with their classroom teacher before school each morning for one-on-one time.
Reading Emphasis - Thanks to everyone for your participation in our "Teaching Reading in Your Discipline" PD. It was nice to move from group to group and take note of the good conversations going on within them. We hope one of your main take-a-ways is that we have to approach each reading event differently--depending on the text students are reading. Perhaps some of you will take time next week to go over the textbook structure with your students.
Ms.McGrath shared a good strategy with me for doing that very thing. This strategy came from a seeing impaired individual. The idea is to take a chapter of your textbook, make a copy of it, and display it, so all students can see how it flows. This can lead into an excellent discussion about how the text is put together and the various features it has. As we discussed in our workshop, this will become a catalyst for students to make and check predictions based on their knowledge of the text structures.
Ms.Groszek shared that she did a debate about the Electrical College in her Statistics class. One student was so engaged, she expressed she might like to become a political scientist.
This kind of teaching-which relates to students' lived experiences' is powerful. Research suggests, the relevancy piques students' interest and helps to motivate them.
I know many of you are doing similar things in your classes, and it is excellent. Keep up the good work!
Curriculum
Curriculum Mapping:
As of the last meetings I had with Curriculum Coordinators, most of you are on track-if not ahead of schedule-with our curriculum mapping. This shows dedication on your part, and it is appreciated. If, for any reason, you are not on schedule, please reach out to Dr. Vallone. We want to be able to begin next semester with everyone on the same page--reading to dive into UbD Stage two.
In preparation for looking at Stage two, you may want to do some reading on various kinds of assessments which are appropriate for your discipline. Sometimes, we tend to stay with what we know--which can tend to be quizzes and tests. However, there are many other ways to assess students. Ms. Groszek's debate is a good example. I am sure her assessment reflected the fact that her students could transfer their knowledge from the stats class to the voting booth. This performance assessment tells us a lot about the students' grasp of essential skills.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be sure to have your phones available between the hours of 7:30 a.m.-8:15 a.m. as Dr. Vallone may need to ask you to cover a class period in the event of someone's absence. At those times, it is very important for her to get a a quick response. Thanks!
If you are in need of a same-day substitute, please follow the procedure below:
1) Text Dr. Vallone @ 708-674-4397 as early as possible. Also send an e-mail to tvallone@reshs.org.
2) E-mail your department's curriculum coordinator.
3) Call the school and leave a message at extension 500. This line will be set up this week.
If you have further questions, contact Dr. Vallone
Have a wonderful weekend!
Happy Birthday!
