STARBASE ROBINS - Making an Investment in Tomorrow's Workforce

Meet Our Executive Director

“Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don’t fight them. Just find a new way to stand.”

Oprah Winfrey

Welcome back to a new school year. STARBASE ROBINS is ready to welcome students back to our facilities here at the Museum of Aviation. We had an outstanding summer program, but after more than a year without having students regularly attend our 5th-grade program, we are looking forward to the interaction to have fun with STEM.

Welcome to the new electronic issue of our newsletter. We are excited about the possibility of sharing our STEM news with you more often. Would you please help me in welcoming new faces at STARBASE? You will learn about them in this issue as well as in our upcoming issues.

We have had some challenges this past year, but we have looked for opportunities within those challenges. Thanks to all our school districts and schools that support us and work with us through the difficulties.

Let’s have an excellent STEM-tastic year!!

Big picture
STARBASE ROBINS is a Department of Defense (DOD) premier educational program aimed at increasing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) awareness in local schools. Our program provides 5th Grade students with 25 hours of stimulating hands-on, minds on experiential learning in STEM, and currently serves 22 elementary schools including one private school in five Middle Georgia counties: Bibb, Bleckley, Dooly, Houston, and Twiggs. Students learn the importance of goal-setting, teamwork, and communication skills. The goal of the program is to motivate students to pursue careers in STEM, to serve students that are historically under represented in STEM, and to expose socio-economically disadvantaged students to a unique learning experience. Our 5th grade instructors teach a STEM infused curriculum that exposes students to different components of physics, chemistry, energy, technology, engineering, and math.
Big picture
STARBASE 2.0 is a school-based after-school program that targets at-risk students in Grades 6th-8th. Our STARBASE 2.0 Coordinator and Facilitators work with 15 middle schools in Bibb, Houston, Peach, and Twiggs. Our afterschool programs are highly structured and intended to help support school goals by increasing student interest, engagement, and STEM career awareness. The individual programs at each school use a variety of different team projects to achieve these goals. STEM Projects include topics like robotics, rocketry, engineering, FIRST LEGO League, technology, and aerospace. Mentors play a vital role in the success of this program. Our mentors serve in the capacity of STEM coaches and role models.
