Mrs. Lambert's Third Grade Class

First day of school August 20th.

Welcome to Third Grade

I am so excited that your child is going to be in my class this year. This newsletter is to let you know some of the policies for my class. Please contact me if you have any questions. You can email me at cw278410@ohio.edu, or you can call the school at 740-452-3977 and they will direct you to me.

About Me

My name is Mrs. Lambert. This will be my first year teaching. I went to Ohio University Zanesville. I have been married for 2 years. I have a son named Lincoln who is one. I love to read. Harry Potter and A Series of Unfortunate Events are some of my favorite books. I enjoy spending time with my family. I like to thrift shop and find good deals. I love children, and I love teaching. I am very excited to begin the year and get to know each and every one of my students.

Goals

As you all know, third grade is a pivotal time for reading instruction. The third grade guarantee can seem a little scary. One of our main focuses will be on reading this year. Not only will we spend an hour a day solely on reading, we will integrate reading instruction into all other content areas. Another goal is to come together as a community. I want all of the children to feel like they can rely on their classmates for help and support as well as rely on me and their own self. I want all of my student to feel a sense of competency, like they can do what they set their mind to if they work hard. I want the class to learn a real sense of respect for themselves and others. I want to instill a love of learning into these children. Hopefully as the year progresses, you will begin to see these things in your children.

What are we going to learn?

Here is a general overview of some of the things we are going to be covering this year.

In Language Arts, we will be closely looking at the characters in the stories we read and how their actions affect the events of the book. We will be working on point of view and discovering that our point of view is often not the same as the characters in our books. We will be learning how the illustration in a book help us understand what is happening. We will be reading the A Series of Unfortunate Events series and comparing and contrasting the different books. We will be working on main idea. We will be working on writing opinion papers and how to support our opinion. We will be doing a few research projects and will be learning how to incorporate technology into our writing.

In Math, we will be working on multiplication, division, fractions, estimation, measurement, area, and look at the attributes of different shapes.

In Science, we will be looking at Earth's resources. We will be studying living things and how they grow and change. We will be studying different forms of energy.

In Social Studies, we will be looking at our community and how it has changed over time. We will learn to use timelines, maps, and other primary sources to discover how things have changed. We will look at how different communities are affected based on the agriculture, industry, and natural resources in that community. We will look at transportation and how that affected communities. We will look at our responsibilities as a citizen. We will study laws and the people that enforce those laws. We will study different governments. We will look at consumerism.

Take Home Folder

We will be using a Take Home Folder. This folder should go home with your child every night. The right side is called the Bring Back side. This is stuff that needs to be brought back to school with the child after it is complete. This could be things like permission slips or homework. Please make sure to check this section and return the things in it.

The left hand side is called Stay at Home. This is things like completed papers, tests, or information about upcoming events. It is also important to check this side to stay updated about things going on in your child's academic life as well as events happening in the class and at school. The only difference is the items on this side do not need to be returned to the classroom.

Homework Policy

We will have homework 2 nights a week. Homework will be in the child's take home folder on the right hand (Bring Back) side. There will be something sent home Monday night and Wednesday night. The homework sent home Monday night needs to be brought back by Wednesday. The homework sent home Wednesday night needs to be brought back by Friday. No homework on the weekend :)

First Day

For the first day of class, please plan to bring in three things that will help us get to know you. This can be things like toys, pictures, video games, books, etc. These things will be used at the beginning of class to help each student introduce him or herself. After our introduction portion, all of these items will be put back in the student's backpack. Please make sure everything the child is bringing in is appropriate for third grade. Thank you!
