We will be finishing our MCAS MATH this week

Dear Families,

We want to remind families that MCAS math is scheduled for the following days this week:

  • Grade 3 students will be tested on May 16
  • Grade 4 students will be tested on May 17
Make up tests for any students who were absent will be on May 18 & 19

Thank you for ensuring your child is at school on time and is well rested.

Pictures from the Garden Club Week #2

The week our garden club crew filled our garden containers with soil but first prepared them to have effective drainage. We also planted a variety of herbs and edible flowers. Next week the group will plant vegetables.

Pictured to the right is Gregory, Nataniel, and Shelby, gathering leaves for the bottom of the containers.

Special thanks to Mrs. Nancy Berthiaume for leading this program that is generously funded with a grant from the Athol Royalston Education Fund.

Catch of the Day

Our School Support Noon Duty staff continue to be recognizing students in their, "Catch of the Day," program. This honor is given to students who staff observe demonstrating our school expectations of respect for self, respect for others, and respect for property during recess. Each day they choose one student from recess as the Catch of the Day who receives a certificate, a stuffed fish for a day, and is entered into a weekly drawing in the "fish bowl" to be picked as Catch of the Week. Here are this weeks catches!

Bus Evacuation Safety Drill

How fortunate for us that we had a beautiful sunny day on hand when we participated in our recent spring bus evacuation drill. Additionally this past week we practiced a fire safety drill from our building.

Pictured are fourth grade students from Mrs. Robinson's class practicing the emergency exit from the rear door.

Insect and Tick season is upon us

The health office has been seeing children with black fly and mosquito bites. We have also seen some ticks. To protect your child and to keep him or her more comfortable, as itchy insect bites make us miserable (!), please consider using an insect repellent. There are various products on the market including all natural formulas. We also wanted to pass on a tick repellent recipe that someone had shared. If you try it, please let us know how well it works!

Caught Being Good

Our faculty and staff use Caught Being Goods as just another way of letting children know that we notice and appreciate simple acts of being helpful and kind throughout our school. When a student receives a Caught Being Good he or she also receives a small prize from Principal Ellis. PIctured to the right is Jaade.

Here are some recent students awarded with a Caught Being Good and a short video of students we have recognized this year!

Preschool Gardeners in Action

Our preschool program has been busy paying visits to their raised garden in front of the school and using their watering cans to tend to the plantings. Let's just say they are such eager helpers!!

PE Classes Take to the Field

Mr. Anderson is actively demonstrating placement of the ball in a cooperative challenge game with Mrs. Jones' second grade class. With the nicer weather students have been enjoying outdoor PE. Special thanks to Mr. Chuck, our custodian, for getting the big field in front of the school mowed in addition to his many other duties.

Friendship Flowers

Mrs. Schwab has been teaching friendship skills in her guidance counseling groups. Recently, students made friendship flowers after talking about and practicing friendship skills. While there are so many skills that help make someone a good friend here are just a few:

  • listen to others
  • be patient and kind
  • include other people in games and at lunch
  • take turns
