Informal and Formal Observations

Informal observations over this week will continue to focus on looking for evidence of and providing feedback on the seven high impact techniques which teachers use to create a ready to learn environment with a classroom culture that directs student behaviors. These seven techniques were identified and discussed during the January 26th professional development session.

- strategic arrangement of furniture

- behavior management system in place

- pre-established routines and procedures

- teacher artifacts, graphic organizers, and academic anchors

- student work displayed

- positive framing (strategic use of positive reinforcement)

- redirect inappropriate behavior and strategically stop misconduct

Focus on Domain 1 - Setting Instructional Outcomes: Balance

What does highly effective look like?

  • Plans lessons that include instructional outcomes which represent different types of learning and permit students to integrate their learning across several disciplines.

  • Plans lessons that include methods for students to demonstrate that they’ve achieved outcomes through processes, such as writing or presentation that integrate other disciplines.

  • Presents lessons that require higher order thinking; students are responsible for searching out necessary factual information.

  • Plans lessons where the processes and content directly align with the outcomes in other disciplines.

  • Generates a method such as a matrix or spreadsheet to track the different types of instructional outcomes requiring assessment to ensure that instruction and assessment are balanced over time. (One standards is not taught to the detriment of others)

  • Develops outcomes which are differentiated so that individual students are encouraged to take appropriate educational risks.
