A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear LPE Families,
Thank you for helping make our teachers feel so supported and special during this unusual time of remote learning. Many of the teachers shared examples of encouraging words and generosity of spirit during our PLT meetings this past week. We are truly blessed to serve such an amazing family community.
A few parents have reached out about picking up remaining medications from school. Two systematic medication pick up opportunities were offered to parents earlier in the pandemic. If your family needs to pick up medications, please reach out to our lead receptionist, Lori Baysden at lbaysden@wcpss.net. Our entire front office team is trained in medication administration and two members will make themselves available to support your request. Otherwise, medication may remain at school and will be kept locked in our health room cabinets, along with accompanying paperwork.
Do you need to register a child for Kindergarten, but are having trouble accessing the online registration platform? Don't worry, we are here to help! Call or email Elana Murray, our Data Manager, at 919.290.2333, ext. 21289/ emurray3@wcpss.net

Our Student Support Team Cares - May 11th Update
In these uncertain times we wanted to make sure to reach out to families. Below you will find a link to resources that the district has put together. We have also included some tips for parents to consider.
Here are some general tips to keep in mind during these weeks at home with your children:
Share with children what you’re doing to keep them safe. Help children learn about and practice proactive strategies, such as frequent handwashing, to stay healthy. In addition to promoting healthy practices, this can help them feel a greater sense of control.
Come up with fun alternatives to show signs of affection while minimizing the spread of germs. For example, elbow bumps or footshakes.

For Parents: Are you feeling a little PARENT Trapped?
Parent Trapped by Common Sense is here.
Many of us at Common Sense are working parents at home with our families. As we talked about how we were all coping, we realized what we really wanted was a way to capture candid stories, recommendations, and tips for maintaining some semblance of "normal" in these very not-normal times.
So, we decided to launch a podcast, which we're calling Parent Trapped. Each episode will feature interviews with experts and tips on everything from making learning at home more fun to finding movies and shows the whole family can enjoy.
The first episode of Parent Trapped is live now.

Deadline Extended - Safety Patrol Application Process (Rising 4th and 5th Graders)
Dear rising 4th and 5th grade Students and Parents,
We are happy to announce that Laurel Park is accepting Safety Patrol applications for the 2020-2021 school year!
Below is a video introducing Safety Patrol for next year. Please note: I was able to open the video on my phone and PC without issue, but on a MAC I had to first download it and then open/play it.

Safety Patrols are our 4th and 5th graders who assist other Laurel Park Penguins during arrival and dismissal. Their duties include opening and closing car doors during morning carpool, taking students out to the cones for afternoon carpool, holding bus numbers as students get to the right bus, and putting the flag up and down each day.
If selected, your child will be assigned 1-2 positions each week for the semester. These assignments will not change from July-December. We have chosen to do the assignment per semester next year to accommodate families changing schedules (and because we know some students do different activities/sports in the fall versus the spring). Additionally, safety patrol officers get very excited at the beginning of the year and the excitement tends to lessen as the year moves on. On the application, we have asked you to provide all the days your child is available to serve as Safety Patrol and if selected, we will make 1-2 assignments per week for July-December based on the availability you submitted. We will ask for availability again in November/December in order to create a schedule for January-June.
Remember, this assignment will last the entire semester, and it is expected that your child be at their assigned post every week EXCEPT when they are tracked out or sick. Morning duty starts at 8:40 a.m. and afternoon duty will end at approximately 4:05 p.m.
If you are interested, please complete the google form application, which is linked below. It consists of 2 parts. Part 1 - Complete the information page of the application. This allows you to let me know your commitment and availability. Part 2 - Write an essay stating why you would be a good Safety Patrol candidate. YOU WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR SAFETY PATROL UNLESS THIS ESSAY IS SUBMITTED!
Once you have submitted your application and essay, two things will happen. 1) I will be contacting your parent(s) to confirm that they know that you have applied and understand the commitment on your (and their) part if you are selected. And 2) I will be asking your current teacher to complete a Teacher Recommendation form. Teacher recommendations will help to determine who is selected for Safety Patrol.
Please complete this application no later than Friday, May 22nd.

We can’t wait to give our Penguins this exciting leadership opportunity! Safety Patrol members will be notified before the end of this school year through email.
Important points to remember:
Safety Patrol lasts for the entire year (assignments are by semester) and will begin the week of July 13th (tracks 1, 2, 3) and August 3rd (track 4).
Morning duty begins at 8:40. You cannot be dropped off earlier than 8:40.
Afternoon Duty will end by 4:05. You need to be picked up at 4:05
Not everyone that applies will be selected.
You must show Penguin Pride in all that you do.
