Workplace Simulation Project - Real World Workplace Experience.
Washington High School has partnered with Direct Employers Institute, Indiana University’s Center for P-16 Research and Collaboration, and Daviess Community Hospital to offer students in Rhonda York’s algebra class and Dave Harmon’s Project Lead The Way Biomedical Science class the opportunity to apply what they are learning to solve real-world problems. Through this project, students will explore infectious diseases and how they are spread and learn how the infrastructure of public healthcare can impact a community. Students will then develop a contingency plan for their school in the case of an epidemic and communicate the dangers of an outbreak to their classmates. This is a nine-week project that meets weekly with health care professionals from DCH mentoring and checking their progress along the way.
At the Workplace Simulation Project kick-off event on February 27th, students were given materials and asked to create a device to remove a blood clot from an artery, represented by a ball in a tube. Working in teams, students collaborated to brainstorm ideas, create a device, test the results and find ways to improve the device’s design. The class also had the opportunity to tour the hospital and hear from a panel of health care professionals and ask questions about careers in health care.
