Kingwood HS Speech Tournament
A squad of only 16 competed at the Kingwood HS Speech Tournament this month and brought home 3rd place Grand Sweepstakes out of 27 schools. This was an amazing feat considering the sizes of most of the other programs in attendance. Individual winners included:

Clear Falls High School Speech Tournament
Clear Falls High School and came in 6th place in Grand Sweepstakes out of 26 schools. Twenty students competed with twelve of them attending their very first speech tournament. Individual results were:

Academic Decathlon
The Friendswood Mustang AD team recently traveled to Morton Ranch HS. They placed third in the overall team competition. We are so proud of these kids. We have not worked through two of the resources ( art and social science) due to Harvey, so this is indeed an accomplishment. This is a wonderful group of young people and we are delighted to work with them. Fred and Elizabeth are amazing coaches. It was a good day for all. We also won 44 individual awards in the seven events and four overall individual awards.

Upcoming - Veteran's Day
Veterans and Active Duty Military Appreciation Assembly
On the Campus of Friendswood High School
On November 8, 2017, Friendswood High School Administrators and United States History Department/Social Studies Department will host the Second ANNUAL Veterans and Active Duty Military Appreciation Assembly. We wish to invite all Veterans, Active Duty Military, and their spouses to our Assembly. The Assembly will include FHS junior and senior students.
While Veterans Day is November 11th, honoring the end of World War I., we are hosting this event on Wednesday, November 8th
Guests are asked to arrive on the FHS Campus between 9:45 AM and 10:00 AM
After checking in with the Receptionist (this process takes a few minutes), guests will be escorted to the Library for a light Breakfast Reception hosted by the FHS PTO, and to be greeted by FISD/FHS Administrators and History teachers. At 10:45 AM everyone will move to the Auditorium for the Program. The Program will include the singing of the National Anthem by the FHS choir, words of appreciation by Administrators, speeches by Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a musical tribute to all branches of the U.S. Military.

Upcoming - Fall Social
We are so excited to share that the Transition Center's 4th Annual Fall Social is coming up on Saturday, November 4th from 11am to 3pm.
As usual we will have plenty of games, arts & crafts, moonwalk, silent auction, family pictures, lunch, and of course the dunking booth. We are excited to add a slide and baby animals this year!!!
Academics
Pharmacy Technician Program
The Pharmacy Technician program learned how to count pills in class, utilizing candy. This is one of the skills the students will be performing when they start their internship in March.
Health Science Clinical Rotation Classes
The Health Science Clinical Rotation classes have been busy preparing to start their clinical rotations at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. They have learned how to properly wash their hands, how to take blood pressure, pulse, respirations and temperature, how to perform CPR and how to properly apply personal protection equipment (gown, gloves, masks). On Thursday, October 19, they had orientation and will start their rotation on Tuesday, October 24.
Math Classes Play "Dance Dance Transversal"
Mr. Parr and Ms. Maxwell's Geometry class played "Dance Dance Transversal" to review for an upcoming class quiz.

Friendswood Varsity Tennis advanced to 3rd round of state playoffs by defeating Deer Park 11 0 in Area Championship Oct 19. and they defeated George Ranch 13 4 in bi district match October 17!
Special Olympics
Please congratulate the following athlete on their outstanding achievements at the State Aquatics competition in College Station. Each of our athletes not only swam their personal best times, the completely destroyed their previous times!! It was exhilarating to watch them.

Fine Arts
Marching Festival
The Marching Festival was a great success, we had beautiful weather and great performances all day. The bands were pleased with the event and enjoyed their stay. We had 16 bands including Pearland, Dawson, North Shore, Oak Ridge, Clements, and Stephen F. Austin who was our champion. Friendswood performed in exhibition at the end of the finals to a standing ovation.
Bands of America Marching Contest
Competing this month at the Bands of America Conroe Regional, the FHS Marching Band finished 13th overall out of 30 bands that performed. Bands of America has classes, 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A that are based on enrollment in grades 10-12. Friendswood finished third in class 3A. The students had their best performance of the season and have improved since our festival last week. We are very proud of them!
This week we will finish learning the last 2 minutes of our show and hope to perform a full show this coming weekend at the Lone Star Preview Marching Contest in Conroe.
FHS National Named as a National Performing Arts School of Excellence
Saturday night, October 14, 2017, at 7 pm FHS Fine Arts Department was selected to receive the NFHS National Performing Arts School of Excellence. With the assistance of the Texas UIL, FHS is selected for its exemplary diverse and award-winning programs. This recognition is awarded to one high school each fall during the National Performing Arts Week for the NFHS, which is the week of October 10-14.

On Saturday October 21st, the Friendswood Choirs competed in the Region and Concert Choir auditions at Clear Creek High School. We are so proud of ALL of the singers that have worked so hard to reach this level of excellence.

Region Mixed Choir
52 FHS singers auditioned at the Region Audition, the second level of a long string of four highly challenging auditions. Each of the eight rooms had 48 singers audition, and the top 15 were selected to advance to the third level, the Pre-Area Audition, that will be held on Saturday December 2nd at Shadow Creek High School. The following 27 singers have advanced to that round:

Concert Choir Auditions
43 FHS singers auditioned at the Concert Choir Audition. This is a single level audition, and they will perform at the Region Clinic and Concert along with the Region Mixed and Treble Choirs later this month. 27 singers have been placed into the Concert Choir:

Friendswood will have 72 students representing the school at the Region Concert on November 11th at Santa Fe High School. Congratulations to all of these fine singers!
Romeo & Juliet
FHS Theatre recently presented William Shakespeare’s first great tragedy and one of his most beloved works, “Romeo and Juliet.”
Leading the cast is senior Garrett McGregor as Romeo and sophomore Isabella Morrison as Juliet. The cast features senior Andrea Beasley Juliet’s nurse, senior J. C. Mills as Mercutio, Tyler Pittman as Paris, Garrett Morris as the Friar and Jacob Vegas as Benvolio. Others in the cast are Jacob Johnstone, Jacquelin Kutz, Rory Sims, Trevor Wilson, Sydney Antil, John Murray, Mckenzie Weddel, Jake Henkels, Victoria Robles, Mitchell Bauer , and Lauren Goolsby. Senior Garret Morris has choreographed Juliet’s Party and Tayor Greny, Presley Wilson as dance captains.
Set construction was under the guidance of Technical Director Amy Thornton and Technical Theatre classes I, II, III and IV. Senior Meredith Fraga is designing the lights. Tech students include: Jacob Jaime, Jordyn Wescott, Nancy Otto, Jana Ryan, Emily King, Jordan Anderson, Ethan Evans, Brandon Lantau, Trey Hahn.
FHS THEATRE has collaborated with College of the Mainland’s Theatre Department chairman and director, H. Russ Brow, for fight choreography, training and safety. Mr. H. Russ Brown is a nationally recognized and award-winning theatre artist/educator who has worked at theatres, colleges and universities across the country for the past 30 years. He holds an M.F.A. degree in acting from Western Illinois University and is a Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors. Alumni Tommy Stuart, recent graduate of University of Oklahoma’s Department of Theatre has worked as a vocal coach and assisted director Kathy Powdrell with staging. Tommy Stuart is a former actor at Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park, Great River Shakespeare Festival and many productions as he earned his BFA Acting at The University of Oklahoma
Students were visited by alumni Troy Beckman, senior at The University of Houston Department of Theatre whose credits include Richard the Third, Houston Shakespeare Festival 2017 and currently on stage at Main Street Theatre is also certified by the American Fight Director.
Producer/Director Kathy Powdrell states that even post Harvey this has been an exciting time at FHS theatre. So much collaboration with alumni and theatre professionals such as H. Russ Brown and College of the Mainland.
Romeo, Garrett Morris says “We have put in a great deal of hard work this month on text, staging, and combat scenes amd training. The stunning fight scenes and the intense passion will keep you on the edge of your seat.”
Isabella Morrison who plays Juliet says,” Being able to be apart of such an iconic play has been an amazing experience. We have been working endlessly to create a beautiful, emotional and action filled scenes you will not want to miss.”
Senior John Murray who plays Romeo’s man says: ” I went to Verona, Italy two summers ago and it has been an honor to bring this beautiful show to life on the stage.”
Andrea Beasley, Thespian/Theatre president says: ” Saturday night we will dedicate the performance to Dickinson High School’s UIL One Act Play team. We have been gathering gift cards to share with our friends down in Dickinson who have been so hard hit after Harvey.”
