Explore Near-Space at the Adler Planetarium this summer!

The Astro-Science Workshop (ASW) is a fun, intensive program about space exploration designed for high school students in the Chicago area. This year's program will focuse on MARSDROP -- testing technology for the controlled landing of tiny spacecraft on Mars!

Sponsored by the Adler Planetarium and the National Science Foundation, the ASW originated more than 40 years ago during the space race and Apollo program. ASW encourages students to pursue careers in science by offering the unique opportunity to work hands-on with scientific instruments and research-quality data. This incredible 3-week opportunity runs Monday through Friday from July 6 through July 24 from 10 am to 3 pm. If accepted, there is a $50 registration fee; however, fee waivers are available in case of need.

  2. Fill out the application form. This may be emailed or mailed to the address listed above.

All materials must be submitted by Friday, June 26; however, admission will take place on a rolling basis, so applications should be submitted AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Email is the recommended method of correspondence in all cases.

About the Program

The central organizing theme of the ASW is hands-on, team-based scientific exploration. The focus of this year's program is MARSDROP -- testing technology for the controlled landing of tiny spacecraft on Mars!

Join us to build and launch scientific instruments to the edge of space on high-altitude balloons with some of the finest astronomers and scientists worldwide. You'll also build new friendships with other Chicago-area high school students.

The remainder of the program will be focused on the design and construction of experimental sensors to measure various properties of the Earth's atmosphere, including the light and radiation environment, culminating in the third week with the launch, chase, and recovery of these experiments on board a high-altitude balloon.
