The Great Kindness Challenge At Marsh Junior High School

All kids deserve to learn in a safe, supportive and caring environment. The Great Kindness Challenge provides a powerful tool that actively engages students, teachers, administrators, families and communities in creating a culture of compassion, acceptance, unity and respect.

Our school is proudly participating in a week-long program dedicated to creating a culture of kindness and compassion known as the Great Kindness Challenge. To help our students

practice kindness and put their compassion into action, they will receive a Great Kindness Challenge checklist. We encourage all students to complete as many acts as possible at school and hope they feel inspired to continue them at home! In addition, students can look forward to kindness spirit days and lunchtime kindness activities. Together, we will lift each other up, cheer each other on and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!

Support for Quarentined Students

Students who are returning from quarantine will be placed in our Center for Success program at lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They’ll receive a front of the lunch line pass and go straight to a teachers classroom to work on assignments from their absence. They can continue to attend Center for Success as long as they need to get caught up. We also offer Saturday Academy various Saturdays of the year. Students attend the full session from 9-1 and work on any current or absent work with the support of a teacher.

Students who are able to continue working while in quarantine should monitor their Google Classroom regularly and reach out to their teachers by email. They are also encouraged to complete any work that was started before going on quarantine to prevent more build up of assignments when they return.

Classroom Spotlight

This week’s classroom spotlight is Mrs. Metzger's STEM Class. Students showed off their STEM knowledge by creating their own robot using vex kits. They then programed their robots to be abl to pick up blocks and take them to new locations. Programming and building the robot offers students a hands-on approach to their project, allowing them to fully understand how both hardware and software work together. This elective offers studnets experience for many future career choices. Way to go Gators, we are so excited about what you are doing!!

AVID WICOR Showcase

Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, is a proven learning support structure, known as WICOR , that incorporates teaching/learning methodologies in the critical areas of Writing to Learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to Learn. WICOR provides a learning model that educators can use to guide students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at increasingly complex levels.

Marsh’s teachers have been trained in the WICOR principles and incorporate their proven strategies into their lessons. This week's WICOR spotlight is Mr. Peterson’s English classroom. Mr. Peterson had students work on creating claims and counterclaims for argumentative essays. Students used a graphic organizer to write claims and counterclaims on relevant topics such as school uniforms and screen time for students. Students then had to come up with major points to their argument and share it as a class. Other students could then add to that argument or give a counterclaim. This was a great lesson on organizing your writing, and sharing collaboratively in a socratic seminar style. Way to go Mr. Peterson you are a WICOR Rock Star!!
