Interactive Math Gaming
Everyone Loves Gaming, right?
Again, there are a plethora of math interactive sites out there that contain games. I have personally found get success in my classroom with eight of the nine. Wizen world just recently came online and I love what they've done with it so far.
Games are a great way to get kids practicing content in a way that the Xbox/Playstation generation is familiar with. As a gamer, it's also something that engages me and keeps me on my toes.
The Goods!
Power My Learning
Power My Learning is a repository of not just math games, but games from different content areas. Teachers and parents can create playlists that align with different standards.
Sumdog
Sumdog gives kids a multitude of options to practice their math skills. Students can challenge students from all over the world as well. There are paid aspects of this site.
Mangahigh
Mangahigh has extremely engaging math games. While there are paid aspects to the site, most of it is free. If you sign your students up, they can play against other students all over the world as well. In addition, a school can become engaged in a Fai-to, a direct competition with another school.
Wizenworld
Wizen World is a newcomer to the "game." If you or your students are fans of Legend of Zelda or Battle of Olympus from the old 8 bit Nintendo, you'll dig this. New content is being added and modifications made, but its a great concept for math instruction and a lot of fun to play. They're in beta so if you have suggestions email Mr. Cheenath once you registered.
Math Fights
Math Fights let's you handle some hand to hand math combat. You never know what kinds of problems you'll receive so it's not really something that younger learners will be successful with initially, but they can always pass questions that they are uncomfortable with.
Equation Creations
Equation Creations are just plain fun. More of a secondary site, but one can build equations and see the resulting shapes. Really fun...even when you don't understand the math.
PBS Kids Cyberchase
PBS Kids Style Math games for our elementary friends.
The Entire Oswego Site
Oswego County School District has a bevy of sites that offer learning an opportunity to hone their basic math skills. My personal favorite is Powerlines. The site also allows you the ability to build your own games.
Calculation Nation
Calculation Nation is NCTM's gaming product. It allows you to challenge others to math duels. One can also limit the interactions just to your own classroom.
