Newsletter 21- 24 July 2019
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Wishing you all a fantastic start to the new term! I hope everyone managed to have a wonderful break over the school holidays, with enjoyable family time spent with your children. As we begin this new term, may we ask for God’s blessing on our community and keep in our prayers, those families who are sick at this time or have experienced some form of loss.
I look forward to supporting staff and students as they work through another busy, yet exciting term ahead.
Please check out the very popular goliath swing, installed on Monday. By all accounts, students are having a great time in this area, with the swing certainly adding another positive dimension to outdoor learning and play. A huge thank you must go to Mrs Pina Pettinicchio for overseeing this project and ensuring it has been successfully managed and completed. Thanks a million Pina.

Farewell Fr Truc
Last Sunday morning, the parishioners celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving to farewell our Assistant Priest Fr Truc. As a school community, we wish Fr Truc all the very best in his new parish of St Vincent, in Kwinana.
Message from Fr Cyprian: Altar Servers
Please note that altar serving, for those interested students will commence in Year Four, after First Holy Communion and training. Interested Year Three students may come along when their older sibling/s are rostered to Altar Serve so they can observe, become more familiar with the sanctuary and get a feeling of what happens at Mass. Year Three students, however will NOT be on the roster. The next new Altar Servers training is on Saturday, 7th September at 10am in the church. Look out for details in the parish bulletin closer to this date.
Why Social Media is Not Smart for our Kids
It is important for us to remember that our young children’s brains are simply too immature to use social media appropriately, therefore we would suggest that parents slow down and rethink what we are allowing children to do. Remember that:
· Social media was not designed for children
· Social media is an entertainment technology and does not make your child smarter or more prepared for learning
· Social media can be an addictive form of screen entertainment
· Social media can replace learning the important skills developed when dealing face-to-face with peers
· Social media can cause the loss of connection within families when the attachment to ‘friends’ becomes more important than that of families.
With this in mind, if you allow your child to access social media, we suggest parents delay access, follow children’s accounts, allow social media only on large screens, limit time, plan face-to-face time with friends and formally plan to spend more organized time together as a family.
(taken from "Why Social Media is Not Smart for Middle School Kids" by Victoria L. Dunckley MD - Mental Health)
Congratulations
I take this opportunity of congratulating Miss Genee Wheeler and her new fiancé Chris on their engagement over the recent school holidays. May they be blessed with much happiness and excitement as they now plan toward a future together.
Many blessings
Tamara McGougan
Principal

Bishop's Religious Literacy Assessment – Years 3 and 5
At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA). This one assessment will be completed online.
The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment is a standardised assessment that is developed and marked by the Office of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of student performance in RE. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, and short and extended response items. Students’ faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school-based assessment programs in RE. Formal school and student reports are produced by the Office and will become available to schools in Term Four.
The testing dates will be in Term 3, Week 3:
Year 5 - Wednesday, 7 August
Year 3 - Thursday, 8 August
If you have any queries please see myself, or the classroom teacher.

School Choir - One Big Voice
Our choir students have been rehearsing for their performance at the One Big Voice concert being held in August. Hopefully these students have been accessing the online resources and practising the songs and actions at home.
Tickets are now on sale from Ticketek. We are performing in the matinee show at 12.30pm. Our school will be closest to the Beethoven section (green) and are standing at Podium 2. My understanding from information I have received is that section 215 would provide the best opportunity to see your child performing.
Please see below for seating details.
Please email me (steven.ostaszewskyj@cewa.edu.au) if you would like to ask a question. I will shortly be sending extra information regarding the performance home with your child.

Up All Night Fundraiser
My name is Ryan White. I am the father of Thomas (Year 1 Gold) and Harry (Kindy Blue).
I've just signed up for Up All Night! I’ll be putting my feet to the test as I walk a marathon distance (42km) through the night, raising vital funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities Western Australia and I need your help!
Tonight, and every night, up to 59 families with sick kids will sleep at the Nedlands and PCH Ronald McDonald Houses. RMHC WA provides free accommodation, education services and a safe, comfortable environment where families can stay together for the duration of their child’s treatment.
I’ve set myself a goal to raise at least $500 – you can help me get there by donating online to my walk here:
https://www.upallnight.org.au/fundraisers/ryanwhite
Thank you for your support - it is truly appreciated.
Best wishes,
Ryan White
P.S. Please forward this message to your family and friends. Together, we can make a real difference!
