Principal's Message
Hello EMS Community,
Welcome to the 2018-19 school year. Hopefully you all have enjoyed some rest and relaxation during the summer months. We, at Evergreen, are so excited to see our 7th and 8th graders walk through the doors this week. Teachers returned to work last Monday and had a great in-service week mixed with team building, professional development, and classroom work time. We have lots of new staff and the energy in the building is as positive as I've felt it in my three years at EMS.
Thanks to all of you who were able to attend our Back to School Social on last Tuesday evening. For those of you who were unable to attend, please take a look at the video below that includes some important information about this school year. Also, if you were not able to attend, your student will be able to pick up their schedule on the first day of school.
There's always a bit of confusion as to whether or not the first Wednesday of the school year is a late start day. Please know that Wednesday, September 5th, is in fact a LATE START day. School will begin at 9:15.
Below are a few photos from in-service week, along with information that will help keep you up to date with things happening around Evergreen.
Here's to a great school year!!

Policy Reminder - Cell phones at school
Cell phones can be a huge distraction in school. Students find it difficult to keep them put away during class and in the hallways. We prefer that students leave their phones at home or turned off during the day. Phones are always available in the office if a child needs to call home. Regardless, cell phones are to be kept out of sight all day during the school day. Students who are seen or proven to be on their phones during school hours will be directed to drop their phone off in the main office until the end of the school day. On the second offense, and all those after, a parent will be required to pick it up from the main office. If your child does need to have a phone for some reason after school, please make sure they know that it must be kept out of sight during the school day.

2018 Hillsboro School District Ticketed Event Safety Protocols
In our continual effort to ensure students are as safe as possible during high school sporting events and activities, changes are being made to our entrance protocols for all HSD ticketed events. Large bags and backpacks; outside food and beverages (empty water bottles ok); and bikes, skateboards and scooters will no longer be allowed inside the venue. Unfortunately there will be no storage available on site for prohibited items, however there will be places to lock bikes and skateboards outside the venue. In addition, middle school and high school students must bring their school ID cards. Additional details and more information about the new protocols will be shared in the coming weeks.

Volunteers Needed in AVID
We are in need of AVID tutors this school year. We have 4 AVID classes, all which take place during 1st & 2nd period. If you are interested in helping out our AVID students and volunteering your time, please contact Mrs. Riley rileyd@hsd.k12.or.us , our AVID site coordinator. You don't need to be an expert tutor by any means. You will be trained in the process and all protocols.
Looking Ahead - Advisory
On Mondays during Advisory, our students are given an opportunity to fill in their planners with the Looking Ahead document. This document is a good resource for students to see what is coming up in each of their classes for the week and to remind them of deadline/tests. Updated Looking Aheads will be posted to our website on Mondays.
