Homeschooling Advice
Tips on Balancing Virtual Learning and Work for Parents
"Whether you are a “homeschooler” or a “temporarily-at-home” schooler, the COVID-19 confinement is daunting! For many, there are no more soccer practices, piano lessons, or math classes. No trips to the zoo or park days with friends. Kids and adults alike are staring at the same four walls, and they sometimes start to feel like they are closing in.
It’s especially challenging for “working from home” parents. For those with kids going back to an in-person classroom only part time, or continuing with entirely virtual learning this fall, you need to provide an education while earning a living — and at the same time deal with the anxiety of getting sick! I know a little something about that. I raised five kids — homeschooled them and ran a business at the same time.
All of us look for ways to foster learning and play. We don’t want to simply pacify our children while we hover over our computers. I hated it when my kids fell into the dreaded “wandering nomad syndrome” — kids who glaze over and complain that there is still nothing to do. I wanted them to be meaningfully engaged, and I wanted to get my work done, too, without feeling resentful of their reasonable interruptions or guilty for not being more attentive.
I have three tips to help you help you and your kids experience the new normal of homeschooling as a gift, rather than a punishment."

High School
Graduation Plan:
Do you have a copy of your student’s Individualized Graduation Plan (IGP)? If not, ask your HST for it! It’s a great resource for understanding your student’s path to graduation.
Reminder:
Our high school student should be enrolled in a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 40 credits each semester. Your student will need special approval to take more than 40 credits. Keep in mind that a student should take an average of 25 credits to graduate with the 200 credits needed.
Academic Integrity:
Academic Integrity is the moral code or ethical policy of academia. This includes values such as avoidance of cheating or plagiarism; maintenance of academic standards; honesty and rigor in academic work. This is a great resource for reviewing what plagiarism is with your student.
Student Support - Math Intervention
Click here for videos, tutorials, ideas, and more for all parents and their students.
Does your student need math intervention?
Step 1: Make sure they are using an evidence based curriculum (Math U See, Right Start Math, Touch Math, Teaching Textbooks, or CLICK HERE for many more adopted curriculums). Work in this curriculum daily for one hour minimum.
Step 2: Use your instructional planning amounts for a twice weekly tutor.
Step 3: What else can I suggest? Try the free programs included in the OSP. Or add OSP a la carte programs like My Math Academy, Shmoop, or Prodigy.
Step 4: If you’ve tried this for 6-10 weeks and your student is still struggling, let’s schedule a Student Study Team appointment with our school success coordinator and see what other options are available.

Enrichment
Do you have enrichment or tech orders that were entered by the last day of school in the Spring, but that weren’t processed by July 1st? Please rest assured that we are working on a solution that will allow the EOS to automatically deduct order totals from the correct school year. Please stay tuned, as more information is coming!
Due to COVID, BookShark orders are typically being processed by the vendor within 10 - 12 days after orders are processed in the EOS.
Please note that Timberdoodle Kindergarten curriculum kits are currently on backorder.
Our payment method was recently updated to credit card for Amazon. When you submit orders for this vendor, you will be prompted to select the school credit card that’s on file (the full card number is not viewable by anyone). Please feel free to select that payment method . . . HSTs will still need to approve all orders, and they will still need to be processed by Enrichment staff.
As a reminder, no in person services can be paid for at this time (even if enrichment certificates were previously issued).
If virtual services are being requested, please be sure to write “virtual” or “online” within each order. This will help ensure that orders are processed as quickly as possible!
These previously recorded webinars are available to view. Join us as we present a showcase of popular (school approved and secular) curriculum to our community. Families also have the opportunity to learn more about some popular curriculum options directly from the vendors!
