News from Carl Sandburg Junior High

A Note from Mrs. Johansen
Dear Sandburg Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you well and staying warm on these chilly December days!
I have included a few updates in this newsletter for families.
- We have our Sandburg Spirit Wear Store open until December 10th. All purchases will be delivered to school before winter break.
- 8th graders will be taking the Illinois Youth Survey in January. Please see the linked parent letter for more information. If you do not want your child to take this survey, please email Mrs. Johansen.
- The 2nd quarter ends on December 22nd. I encourage all parents to check Infinite Campus and touch base with your child about grades. When we return from winter break, we will start 3rd quarter and the 2nd semester. It's hard to believe we're almost half way through the school year.
- As a reminder, we will be on Winter Break starting after school on Friday, December 22 with school resuming on Monday, January 8, 2024. The Sandburg Office will be closed during the time off of school. I will be available by email if there is an urgent need.
- We have a number of families that need help making the holidays bright. If you are able to help “adopt” a child/family, please let us know here. We will connect you with a school that has families requesting help for the holidays.
- As you've heard, should we need to have any snow days this year, D15 will be using e-learning days. These days will count as a day of attendance and we will be learning online during school hours. Our staff is committed to making these days manageable and meaningful- in the event that we need to actually have one!
- In planning for an e-learning day, you can find more information about Internet Options at this SITE on the D15 website. If you need any internet support, please contact the office after reviewing the D15 website.
- Kind request from the Health Office- with the winter season coming quick, we could use additional donations of Kleenex. Each day we have several classrooms that are looking for an extra box of Kleenex and our supply is dwindling. Any donations can be dropped off in the front office. Thank you for your help!
- We are collecting board games or card games for the library. If you see any on sale and would consider a donation, please bring them to the office.
Our school staff contact list is updated and available on the D15 website. Feel free to print it and keep it handy in the case you need to get in touch with any of our staff throughout the year.
Have a wonderful week!
Erika Johansen
Sandburg Principal
Pack the BUS- Wednesday, December 6th!
Between now and when we leave for winter break, District 15 will be working to PACK THE BUS with items for our local mobile food pantry and clothing closet to stock the shelves before the new year.
For the food donations, we are partnering with Faith Feeds, a consortium of local church organizations, that hosts a mobile food pantry in our community. Many local organizations have seen a significant increase in community members attending food pantries including this local mobile food pantry.
For the winter clothing donations, we will be giving any new or gently used winter clothing items (jackets, mittens, snow boots, etc.) to Partners for Our Communities (POC) which has a clothing closet that supports our local community.
You can bring your shelf-stable food or winter clothing donations to our PACK THE BUS stop on Wednesday, December 6th. The Bus will be at Sandburg from 4:45-5:15 pm. If you are not attending the Band Concert that night at Sandburg, you can still bring items to school on Wednesday, December 6th, and we will load them onto the bus that evening. You are also able to drop items at the District Office located at 580 N 1st Bank Rd at any time.
We look forward to sharing the progress each week and cannot wait to fill the bus to support our community.
D15 Inclement Weather Day Plan
Dear District 15 Families and Staff,
As we begin to think about colder weather, we are writing to share the 2023-2024 Emergency School Closure/Inclement Weather plan with you. As a reminder, in the event that we have significant inclement weather creating unsafe travel conditions or due to extreme cold, we will be utilizing an eLearning day this winter. This is a temporary change in practice to ensure we do not extend the end of the school year in order to preserve the days necessary to complete summer construction and all other shifts linked to Moving 15 Forward.
Should we need to call an emergency/inclement weather day, we will notify families through email, text message, and phone calls via our Blackboard Communication system. The information will also be posted on our District and school websites, as well as on the CCSD15 mobile app.
Communication and Notification
In order to ensure you receive timely notification of school closures as well as other school and District communication, we ask that you please take a moment to ensure we have the most up-to-date contact information in Infinite Campus (email address, phone number(s), and cell phone number to receive text messages). To review the contact information we have within our system, please log into Infinite Campus to check for accuracy. If you need assistance logging into your Infinite Campus, please reach out to your school.
Information about eLearning
Our Instructional Technology and Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Departments have been hard at work developing an eLearning plan in the event we need to call an eLearning day. As winter approaches, we want to share expectations and the answers to some frequently asked questions related to eLearning. A web page with additional eLearning information will be available on the district website should an eLearning day be called.
Thank you for your support as we prepare to be able to efficiently and effectively communicate with our families about any potential weather-related closures.

Laurie Heinz, Superintendent
Spectators at Away Sporting Events
We realize that the Junior High athletic events are fun to attend and we have enjoyed having spectators come to the games. If students choose to attend away games at Plum Grove, Sundling, or Winston Campus, it's expected that a parent comes with the students to the basketball game and stays the entire time.
The CHAMPS expectations for spectator behavior are the same at each school in our district. Please remember you are a representative of our school when visiting another school.
Students, from another school, who come in without a parent or guardian will not be permitted to attend the game.
