ANGELA PELUSI IS A DEADHEAD (er) !

No, not the hippie, flower in her hair, peace child type of Deadhead. ( that was then, this is now) I am talking about the botanical kleptomaniac type of deadhead(er). Yep, it's true. As I casually walk past a garden, I may pinch off the seed head of a flower that has already bloomed. I can rationalize this and call it a public service. After all, Master Gardener's highly recommends this practice for the health of the plant. But the truth is, I am far more interested in the seeds that are in each seed head. I am especially fond of varieties that are not commonly seen. During our last vacation to Door County, I would casually pinch a deadhead and stuff my pockets as we strolled through a beautifully landscaped shopping area. Let me just say that the echinacea plant seed head is one prickly little....."thing". Holy cow! Right through my pocket into my thigh! Yeh, that will teach me. Not.

So here's the thing - you would think that I would be satisfied with one or two seed heads, but no, more is better. No real rationale for this, except for a compulsive desire to collect multiples of things. I do plant the seeds that do not wind up in the laundry, and I do harvest seeds in my own garden. I love to share seeds, plants, & cuttings, and I am certain that I have harvested enough seeds over the years to give the New York Botanical Garden some serious competition! I guess once a flower child, always a flower child.

Who would have ever thought that this kid from Brooklyn would turn into a seed-hoarding country mouse ? Can you dig it, man?
