Eighth Grade Visits The Holocaust Museum
Written by: Saabira Diggs
On Thursday, March 19, Woodland’s eighth grade students attended the play “Dear Esther” at the Goodwin Holocaust Museum in Cherry Hill. “Dear Esther” is a play about Esther Turner Raab, a Holocaust survivor who escaped from a concentration camp called Sobibor in 1943. Although she occasionally addresses students, the play’s subject, Esther, was not able to attend.
The play itself was very touching and easy to relate to. The script of the play was very detailed and was acted out nicely. After the play, students had the chance to ask Esther's son, Abe, questions about the play itself, his mother and their experiences.
Eighth grader Jimmy Laphan asked if Abe and his mother had been to Sobibor since the escape. Abe responded that he had been back twice with his mother and showed photos as part of a slideshow.
On the subject of hatred, Mr. Raab commented, “You cannot allow yourself to take actions of unreasoned hate, simply because once you allow yourself to, there's no telling what else you will do.”
The play was very factual and by hearing Esther’s story it become more clear what events took place during this time; a very emotional thing to see.

Woodland Greenhouse
A greenhouse is a building in which plants are grown. Greenhouses allow for greater control over the growing environment of plants and are often used for growing flowers, vegetables, and fruits. Students Josh Carr, Arianna Rommen, Rebecca Styer, and Tyler Bowker are shown planting lettuce, spinach and tomato seeds in Woodland's Greenhouse during spirit week. Check back next month to see what happens after the seeds begin to grow!
