Canopy Adult Program Activities
Week of February 26th-March 1st
A participant creates Valentine's Day-themed pop art during an art session.
Participants enjoy time outside during the nice weather.
Participants help shred newspapers while volunteering at the Anderson Humane Animal Shelter in North Aurora.
Communication Goal
Communication: Nonverbal Communication
Participants will practice how to recognize nonverbal messages. This goal will be measured by the participant’s ability to interpret nonverbal body language cues and the identified sign language presented by the instructor.
Social/Emotional/Life Skills Courses:
Cooking (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday)
In Cooking, participants will be making bruschetta. This month's cooking skills are using a toaster oven and cutting/dicing food. Participants will learn how to safely operate a toaster oven. Participants will learn how to safely use a knife to cut and dice food.
Current Events (Wednesdays)
This week, participants will be learning about the Rabbit hOle Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. The museum celebrates 100 years of children's books. Participants will learn about the books it celebrates, answer questions, and complete an activity related to the museum.
Social Skills (Mondays and Thursdays)
In Social Skills, participants will learn about thoughts + feelings and how they coincide with one another. Participants will answer questions, read social stories, and complete activities related to the topic.
Community Readiness (Fridays)
In Community Readiness, participants will learn about the five senses. They will learn about the importance of each sense, answer questions, and play a game where they have to use each of their senses.
Vocational Training Courses:
Shopping (Mondays and Wednesdays)
Participants will identify and locate items needed to make bruschetta. Participants will follow a shopping list to find the items and quantities needed. They will also work on identifying different grocery departments and what items they contain.
Explorations (Monday)
In Explorations, participants will learn about Valentine's Day. Participants will learn interesting facts and conduct a Valentine's Day-themed science experiment.
LEAPP (Wednesday)
In LEAPP, participants will learn about working in a warehouse. Participants will watch videos on what it is like to work there and participate in mock warehouse-related activities, such as building boxes.
Community Outing (Wednesday AM)
The Wednesday outing group will be going to the Waubonsee Community College track. At the track, participants will get their bodies moving by walking the indoor track.
Community Outing (Thursdays and Fridays PM)
This week, the outing groups will be going to Taco Bell. At the restaurant, participants will practice making a choice, placing an order, and waiting for their food.
Volunteers Group (Thursday PM)
The Thursday Volunteers Group will visit the North Aurora Anderson Animal Shelter. At the shelter, participants will complete tasks including cleaning kennels, helping with laundry, and interacting/bonding with pets!
Volunteers Group (Friday AM)
The Volunteers Group will be working at the Aurora Area Food Pantry. Participants will help with sorting, stocking, and handing out food at the food pantry.
Stables (Mondays-Thursdays)
Participants will be learning about horse jobs and how we can work together with our horses to get a job done. The horses for the week are Monday - Thelma, Tuesday - Louise, Wednesday - Louise, Thursday - Thelma.
Creative Media/Leisure:
This month, participants will be making pop art. They will learn about the history of pop art, how it's similar/different to other forms of art, and learn about different artists.
Music (Tuesday)
In February, participants will learn about music + love throughout the decades. Participants will listen to how love songs have changed throughout the years and how music influences emotions. Participants will play a variety of Valentine's Day-themed activities including a version of musical chairs.
Canopy Creations (Tuesdays and Fridays)
In Canopy Creations, participants will make magnets using clothespins. Participants will glue felt flowers, hearts, etc., to create something original. Once the magnets are made, participants will package them to sell at our next event.
Movement/Personal Wellness (Wednesdays and Fridays)
In Movement, participants will learn about catching and throwing. Participants will watch demonstrations, learn about proper formations, practice catching/throwing with a partner, and play skill-related games.
Community Exercise Outing Group (Tuesdays and Thursdays)
Groups will go to Waubonsee Community College and walk the indoor lap track. When participants walk, eight laps will equal a mile. Our goal is for participants to reach that mile marker.
