JANUARY CALENDAR

Big picture

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday

Today, Monday, January 17, our schools were closed in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.

At STEM, we strive to honor Dr. King's legacy by encouraging students to be aware of the pressing social issues affecting their local, national and global community. Further, we hope to prepare them to be leaders in seeking justice and progress in their communities.

Our planned Day of Service had to be postponed today. We will now hold the event on Monday, February 7. Students and volunteers will spend the morning working on school improvement projects, then hear from successful young alumni who will speak at lunch. More information on this event will be coming soon.

ACADEMIC UPDATES

Conclusion of Second Marking Period

The second marking period came to a conclusion on Friday, January 14. As the third marking period begins on Tuesday, January 18, students and families should keep the following information in mind:

  • Although the marking period is over, teachers have been given an extension until Friday, January 21 to submit final grades. Students who still owe assignments should speak with their teachers on Tuesday
  • All high school students will have new classes on Tuesday. Those who have not done so already should check their schedule on HAC to familiarize themselves with the new classes
  • Due to the extension of the grade deadline, report cards will be published to Home Access Center on Monday, January 24. See below if you still need access to HAC. We will continue to print paper copies of report cards only upon request. Please call the office or email Ms. Jones and Ms. Dixon (yjones@chesterplandsd.org; ldixon@chesteruplandsd.org) to request a paper copy

Home Access Center (HAC) Sign-Up

The HAC is where you will find your student's report card next Monday. Not only that, visiting the HAC will allow you to check your student's grades and attendance on a daily basis.

If you do not have your HAC set up yet, email Ms. Misha Memon (mmemon@chesteruplandsd.org). She will reply with your username, password and a link to the log in page.

Report Card Conferences

Report Card Conferences will be held on Thursday, January 27 from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Appointments are suggested and information about making them will be coming soon. Again, teachers will be available for conferences in-person, and also through Zoom.

We will also be hosting a Vaccination Clinic in conjunction with conferences at STEM on the 27th. First, second and booster shots will be available at no cost to all who are eligible. Please see below for additional upcoming vaccination opportunities.

Keystone Testing - Make Up Exams

Make up exams will begin this week for students who were unable to attend their Algebra, Literature or Biology Keystone exams earlier this month. Students will be notified on Tuesday when their make up exams will be. Please ensure they are in attendance so they can complete these mandatory exams.

RETURN TO SCHOOL - HEALTH AND SAFETY

Health and Safety Protocols

In addition to vaccination, it is important for everyone at STEM commit to following health and safety guidelines. Masks are required at all times while inside CUSD buildings. We recommend the use of N95/KN95 masks, or the combination of a surgical and cloth mask. The vast majority of our students have been compliant with masking policies throughout the year, and teachers will review proper masking in classes this week. In order to maintain the safety of the entire school community and ensure continuity of in-person learning, a student who refuses to comply with our masking policy will be sent home from school.

Please make sure your student comes to school with a mask - N95/KN95 if possible. We will continue to supply masks to those who forget them, however we want to ensure we continue to have plenty of extra on hand.

The Omicron variant of Covid-19 is extremely contagious. If your student is feeling unwell or displaying symptoms of Covid, they must be kept home. You can contact our office by phone or email (yjones@chesteruplandsd.org ldixon@chesteruplandsd.org) to inform us of the absence.

Vaccination Clinics

Vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself and your family from serious cases of Covid. Additionally, the more students who become vaccinated, the more likely we are to stay in school without any returns to remote learning.

In order to help increase vaccination rates, CUSD has arranged a series of free vaccination clinics for the community at our schools. Upcoming dates are listed below. The vaccinations are free for all, and you can receive first shots, second shots, and boosters. Sign up using this link: Vaccination Sign-Up

IN MEMORY

Mr. Horace Collier

Mr. Horace Collier passed away on Tuesday, January 11. Mr. Collier worked in the Chester Upland School District Facilities Department and had been stationed at STEM since 2018 until earlier this fall. He brought a warm personality to our school and was always ready with a joke or a story.
