Roger Williams was kicked out of Massachusetts, and he used Rhode Island as a refuge for people that were persecuted for their religious beliefs. Social life in colonial Rhode Island was complicated and diverse. Social mobility and freedom was judged by wealth, and religion.

The Guy who Founded Rhode Island

Roger Williams founded the colony of Rhode Island because of religious toleration and separation of state. It became a refuge for people persecuted for their religious beliefs. The capitals' name comes from his daughter's name, Providence Williams.
