Week of January 28, 2019
Message from the Principal
Hello Willow Dale Families!
This week was chock full of learning opportunities for our students. Take a moment to read about several activities highlighted in the newsletter.
Tuesday, January 29 will be the end of the second marking period and first semester. On Wednesday, January 30, there is no school for students. Report cards will be sent home in the Wednesday Express on Wednesday, February, 6.
By the end of the week, correspondence from the teachers regarding Parent Conferences on February 15 will be sent home. Since conferences will be held during the half day, teachers will be requesting conferences only if there is a need to meet with parents. If you would like to request a conference, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher.
Monday, February 4, is a two-hour delay day for students. Students report to school at 10:45 AM. Bus stop times will be approximately two hours later than the usual time. Doors open at 10:25 AM. Breakfast and lunch will be served on the two-hour delay day. Students will not have recess.
Please join me in wishing Mrs. Linda Jacobson a happy retirement. Mrs. Jacobson is retiring this week with over 30 years of service and dedication to education. The Willow Dale community will miss her daily interactions with students and expertise in the classroom.
I continue to be amazed by our students and staff for all of their hard work and effort. Through working together, we can make the second semester the best yet. Thank you for your support in ensuring that all Willow Dale students achieve success.
Have a great week!
Cathy Perkins
Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Winners!
On Thursday, January 24, Willow Dale held their annual Fifth Grade Spelling Bee. Back at the beginning of January, the fifth-grade teachers had conducted the preliminary written round in each of their classrooms by giving a written spelling test. From there the top five students from each homeroom moved on to the school oral spelling bee. The twenty-five participants were both nervous and excited. It was an exhilarating afternoon in which all 25 students gave their best effort. In the end, three students remained as the top spellers in fifth grade. The following were the finalists:
- First Place: Paige Mattis
- Second Place: Jack Ischinger
- Third Place: Brianna Mattos
Thank you to all of the fifth graders for encouraging their fellow classmates, the fifth-grade teachers for their collaboration in putting the school bee together, the parents for the supporting their children and our endeavors here at Willow Dale. Also, a big thank you to Ms. Perkins, Mr. Julius, and the entire staff at Willow Dale for the ongoing hard work with all of our students. It is that work that allowed us to conduct this inspiring spelling bee.
Kamishibai Storyteller Visits 3rd Grade
Third graders read the story, Kamishibai Man by Allan Say. In Japan, kamishibai is the old art of telling stories with beautiful picture cards and a small stage. Students read about such a storyteller and discovered that storytelling may change through the years, but people will always love to hear stories.
We had the amazing opportunity to experience this type of storytelling when a kamishibai storyteller visited us this week! A special thank you to Willow Dale Home and School and The Centennial Education Foundation for providing this wonderful experience for our third graders.

Cradles to Crayons RESCHEDULED--January 30
Service Project Opportunity, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for all Willow Dale students & families
Between now and January 30, 2019, our school will be holding our annual used children’s clothing and equipment drive for:
Cradles to Crayons
Cradles to Crayons is a local organization that provides, free of charge, the basic essentials that low-income and homeless children need to be safe, warm, valued, and ready to learn.
Here’s how you and your whole family can help:
Bring in gently used or new items (see list);
Come to WDES on Wednesday, 1/30/19, 9 – 12 noon, to sort and bag all the donations; and/or
Volunteer to drive to the C2C local site to drop off our school’s donations that same day.
We need to know who can help on MLK Day, (all children must be accompanied by an adult), and who is willing to drive to the drop-off site. If you would like to volunteer for either or both, please let Mrs. Kerber know at: kerbha@centennialsd.org.
Sponsored by Willow Dale’s No Place for Hate Committee.
