Message from the Principal- Cameron Ramirez
Lakewood Eagle friends and families, this has been another wonderful week. We had a Whiz Quiz win against South Euless on Monday, PTA Founder's lunch, talent show practices and we are gearing up for our Black History program on Friday and Valentine parties!
I wanted to thank everyone who shared positive feedback with us on the feedback form. I am sharing some of that today as well as addressing a few concerns.
Feedback: The Aladdin play was all my kindergarten son would talk about last weekend! Thank you for providing a creative outlet for older students and allowing the school to support them!
Feedback:Communicating with Parents on events. Communication in general is always really good.
Feedback:Thank you for showing the feedback! What a great idea! Ps. Thank you for promoting college and the UTA field trip!
Feedback:The teachers are awesome. Lakewood has a great staff. They really care about students success.
Feedback:Mrs. Firman... is doing a great job making Math fun and dynamic...
Feedback:Thank you for the opportunity to provide feedback.....and listening.
Feedback: Wished to inquire about any updates on Avery that the school could share publicly or privately? Does the family need anything?
Response: She just started another round of chemo, and her mom said it’s by far,
The hardest round yet-so hopefully it’ll be over as quick as possible and minimal side effects. So technically, she’s in remission but won’t be deemed “cancer free” for another 10 years. (I am including a picture below!)
Feedback: Please help us by celebrating what we are doing well and giving us tips on how we might serve you better. Feedback from the previous week is included in the newsletter. You can click on the link below:
Feedback:The bottom of the page for the Lakewood Parent Communication still has not changed and has the meeting date from September on it.
Response: The item at the bottom with the September date is from our Title 1 night that is a federal requirement. We are obligated to post this information in a place that parents have access to know when our meeting was and what was covered. I have chosen this as the avenue and it will not be removed.
Feedback:Today at drop off there were fewer people to help receive the kindergarten students from their cars. Despite having about ten cars in line parents were directed to take their students to the front office. It simply took longer to get through the line due to not having three people; why can't there be an exception on bad weather days that if parents are in the drop off line students can still enter through the door? Doesn't it create more work for the front office staff by having them leave the line, secure a parking spot, and then sign them into the office? Why not have some grace if parents are in the line? Surely this isn't more efficient than having ten students sign in through the office; that detracts from precious instructional time. Isn't the goal to make the most of each moment so students can learn? I was informed that volunteers help students out of their cars so it's not as if by waiting outside for a few more minutes hinders a staff member from performing their job.
Response:The people helping your students out of the cars are not volunteers. All of the staff helping in the Kinder line are staff members. With this in mind, they all have roles in the building once the students are inside. We want to encourage families to leave just a little early on rainy days, but we will also work to make sure that everyone possible is out to help assist at drop off. On rainy days, we will re-visit our procedures for tardies. Instead of having families move out of the line, we will take their names as they enter the back door until 8 am. Thank you for this feedback and we will work to make the process smoother!

Lakewood Phone Number
Attention Parents: HEB ISD is upgrading to a new phone system that will be more efficient to administer and maintain. As part of the upgrade, the main phone numbers are changing for each school.
Lakewood’s main phone number is now 817-399-3920.
Our old phone number 817-354-3375 will continue to work for a brief time, but eventually will stop working. Please take a moment and write down the NEW number, and update any saved numbers in your family’s cellphones.

GUIDELINES AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE LAKEWOOD SCHOOL NURSE
* Please keep all phone numbers and emergency contacts up to date. It is important that I can reach you in case your student becomes ill or had an injury.
*HEB ISD policy requires a parent/adult to transport all medications to and from school. If a child is to self-carry an inhaler or epi-pen, the appropriate paperwork must be signed by the physician and parent. ALL MEDICTIONS REQUIRE A SIGNED PHYSICIAN ORDER FORM BEFORE THEY CAN BE GIVEN TO THE STUDENT AT SCHOOL. This includes over the counter medications such as Tylenol, Advil or cough drops. Expired medications will not be given to the student under any circumstance.
* If your child has Asthma, please provide inhaler and/or breathing treatment to the school nurse. The clinic does not have nebulizer machines for breathing treatments. If a child is having difficulty breathing and the nurse does not have appropriate medication, it may be necessary to call 911 if the parent cannot bring the medication soon enough.
* If your child has severe food or other allergy and require Epi-pen, please provide Epi-pen to the school nurse. If the student needs food substitution in the cafeteria, a form must be filled out by the physician. And if your child has a peanut allergy and you would like them to sit at a “peanut free” table during lunch, please notify the school nurse.
*If your child needs to be excused from physical activity for more than 4 days, a letter from a physician must be provided. Any letter indicating a physical restriction must also state when the child may return to full activity. Please do not send your child to school with crutches, wheelchair or cane if they have not been seen by a physician. If your child seems to have an injury severe enough to require these items he/she needs to be evaluated by a physician.
* Each child should have a change of clothes in their backpack. Bathroom accidents, lunch time spills, and mud puddles happen every day. There is limited amount of clothing available in the clinic, and when student comes home with change of clothes from the clinic, Please wash them and send them back to the clinic, except for underwear and socks. If we do not have clothing available for the child, you will have to leave home or work to bring your child’s clothing.
* Please keep your child home for the following: fever of 100 degrees or higher, vomiting/diarrhea in the last 24 hours, ringworm of the scalp, undiagnosed rash, and redness/crusting of one or bother eyes, or if you believe your child is ill. The student has to be fever free without medication for 24 hours before student can return to school. Please do not medicate for fever and send them to school, when the medication wears off fever usually returns. This also inhibits the spread of illness among other students.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me. I am very excited to be here at Lakewood, and I look forward to a safe and healthy school year.

SAFETY CONCERN
All doors are locked when the bell rings at 7:50 am. Students will need to go to the front door to get a tardy pass before going to class. Please remind your child that they must get a pass from the main office before reporting to class. This means if they are coming in by the gym, once the bell rings they must travel around the outside of the building to get to the main office.
Please help us by getting your child to school on time every day.
Wednesdays are COLLEGE Day!
Family Trips
The school calendar is located in your child's MOOSE. Please look for school holidays to plan family vacations or trips. Important instruction takes place every day and we don't want your child to miss anything and possibly get behind!
