DCSD Definition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL):

Social and emotional learning is the process of helping children and adults develop and apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to:

  • recognize and manage emotions;
  • set and achieve positive goals;
  • feel and show empathy for others;
  • create and nurture positive relationships; and,
  • make responsible decisions.

--- Adapted from CASEL Model (Collaborative For Academic Social and Emotional Learning)

When students master these skills, they are more likely to become better students, friends and family members. Children learn social and emotional skills most effectively when the skills are also reinforced at home.

Parents below you will find a handout with SEL strategies you can use at home with your child.

Library Book of the Month

My Mouth Is a Volcano

by Julia Cook

All of Louis thoughts are very important to him. In fact, his thoughts are so important to him that when he has something to say, his words begin to wiggle, and then they do the jiggle, then his tongue pushes all of his important words up against his teeth and he erupts, or interrupts others. His mouth is a volcano! My Mouth Is A Volcano takes an empathetic approach to the habit of interrupting and teaches children a witty technique to capture their rambunctious thoughts and words for expression at an appropriate time.

This is a great story to help students with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) because the story is about learning self-control and not interrupting. It can also be used to talk about feelings and manners (at home and school).

Please enjoy this read-aloud of our October Library Book of the Month.

Pizza Hut Book It Is Here!

The BOOK IT! Program is dedicated to encouraging reading in schools. It motivates children in grades k - 6 to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with a free one topping personal pan pizza.

Your Child's teacher set goals based on reading ability, number of minutes spent reading, number of pages read, or number of books read. For children who cannot read independently, a goal can be set where parents or others can read to them. Parents please check your child's reading log daily.
