In the ruins of a place once known as North America, destroyed by the Great China War, Illea is built. The prince, next-in-line for the throne, has to choose his future wife. In a game known as the Selection, normal girls will try to win the crown, steal his heart, and become a Princess, but there is only one winner, and the competition is getting deadly... Join America, the only Five to make it past day one, on her journey through the palace, while she decides. What life does she want? The life of a two with Aspen, or the life of a one, with Maxon? Her hometown sweetheart, or the Prince she just met? But, that's not the only thing America has to worry about. The other girls all appear to be one step ahead of her every move. Does she have enough in her to stop them? Or, will she be disqualified, and lose her chance at a better life? What does she really want? A normal life, with music, castes, and Aspen, or the life of a princess, no castes, and Maxon? 35 girls came to the palace. Only one will stay... Who will she choose? Who will win? But, most importantly, what does her heart want?

Why should I read this?

The Selection, is by far my favorite series, that I have written so far. I truly enjoyed composing this book. The Characters seem to just pop out of the pages! When I wrote this book, I pictured myself in America's place... A five, fighting for the chance to become a Princess. America faces challenging problems, that most teens face today. I know, that everyone who reads this book will be touched, by all the emotion the characters have. If you are looking for a good read, with complex characters, and a great story-line, read the Selection Series. I would love to get your opinion on my books. You can contact me at, (

Reader Reviews...

"Great YA dystopian book with strong female role models.

I thought the heroine was well developed, and the last sentence in the book implies that America has a strong sense of self. I liked how the history was wound into what we know now and the explanation of how it evolved did not feel like exposition. I look forward to sharing it with my daughters"

“Cass’s immensely readable debut novel is a less drastic Hunger Games, with elaborate fashion and trappings. The fast-paced action will have readers gasping for the upcoming sequel.”

“Reality T.V. meets dystopian fairy tale in Kiera Cass’s delightful debut. Charming, captivating, and filled with just the right amount of swoon!”

"A cross between The Hunger Games (minus the bloodsport) and The Bachelor (minus the bloodsport), this trilogy launch employs multiple conventions of the dystopian romance genre—strong-willed heroine, heart-wrenching love triangle, far-future setting divided by class. That said, it’s a lot of fun. In a post WWIII U.S. divided by caste, teenage America Singer and her family are Fives, struggling musicians and artists. In love with a Six, America is headed for a life of servitude and hunger, until she is chosen for the Selection—a contest through which Prince Maxon will pick his princess. The Selection brings America instant notoriety and prestige, but also thrusts her into a ring of jealous, desperate girls all trying to win the prince’s heart. Cass (author of the self-published The Siren) deftly builds the chemistry between America and Maxon, while stoking the embers of America’s first, forbidden love. Headstrong and outspoken, America is an easy heroine to root for, and the scenes where she tries to fit in to her new royal life are charming. A TV drama based on the books is in production."
