The Willard Weekly

December 7, 2015

Dear Willard Families and Community,

Willard is proud to announce Space Night this Thursday Night from 5:30-7:00 pm. Please be sure to join us for an evening of learning about our Solar System.

  • Rocks From Space: This will be a short presentation from me in the auditorium about meteors, comets, and meteorites. It will teach families how to watch for the upcoming Geminid meteor shower, which is at dusk Sunday night, December 13.
  • Get Run Over by a Robot: There will be a full size inflatable Curiosity rover and a small six wheel rover. Kids can lay down and the six wheel rover can drive over them as they pretend to be rocks on Mars!
  • Telescopes: The Carnegie Observatories are sponsoring telescopes that will be used for star gazing.
  • Build A Solar System: Families will use strings and beads to build a scale solar system.
  • Earth or Mars: Different pictures will be shown one at a time. Participants will vote to reveal if it is a picture of Earth or Mars, and then an explantion will be givne about the photos.
  • Earth Science: Lead scientist for an Earth observing mission from JPL will host a booth to tell families about the mission and Earth science.

Our Willard Annual Fund (WAF) is sponsoring a first aid kit fundraiser. The WAF is fundraising to purchase a shade structure for our lunch area, so please be sure to support this fundraiser. Orders are due Thursday, December 10.

Our IB attitudes for the month of December are enthusiasm and confidence. The profile attribute that we are celebrating is being knowledgeable. Please share these with your child(ren) and discuss how these traits are helpful in daily life.

AAPC is sponsoring a Read, Write, Recite event on December 17th. If your child would like to present a book report to the group please attend the next AAPC meeting at 5:00 pm on Thursday, November 19, in the library to learn more about it.

The Willard Weekly is posted on Willard’s Facebook page. Be sure to like it.

Did you know that all 4th graders receive a free pass for Federal Parks (families are included)? Please check out this website for more information.

Willard Library

Birthday Book Club

Look for a letter from the Willard Library inviting your child to join our Birthday Book Club on the month of his/her birthday. This is your opportunity to donate a new book to our library in honor of your child’s special day! If you would like to participate you can send in your donation after receiving the letter. There will be a selection of new pre-purchased library books for your child to choose from. We will place a bookplate with your child’s name inside the book and he/she will be the first to check it out.

This is a fun way to help our school library get new books, and it will give your child a sense of pride and ownership in our library.

Thank you for your support!
