First Grade Weekly Update

January 8, 2016

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to school. We hope you all had a great winter break and are ready to start working! We have a lot of fun and exciting things planned for the next few weeks and things will get pretty busy! This month in writing we will be working on researching Penguins and writing a non fiction report on a particular type of penguin. The first graders will be using the chrome books, websites, and library books to gather their information. Along with researching and writing about penguins, students will also learn about the life cycle, habitat, and animal traits that penguins have. Stop by and read the reports that we will have on display for parent conferences in February!

In math class we have begun the next unit on shapes. We started on Monday with a pre- assessment to see where are students are at with 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. We have then started our instruction with 2D shapes and will move into 3D shapes next week. This is a 3-4 week unit and is very hands-on. We have already explored tangram pieces, made penguins using 2 Dimensional shapes on the chrome books and will build a 3 Dimensional shape next week. The students are enjoying this unit so far and are very engaged in the daily activities. In school we are also working on IXL (a web based program) that has students working on shapes too! Your child can access IXL math at home on their computers. We invite you to ask your child to show you the program and to practice it at home too. The unit on shapes is under K.1-K.12.

This time of the school year is a big step for our first graders! They are really taking off with their independent reading and their fluency. We are working every day on building their fluency, stamina, and reading strategies. Our first graders spend at least 30 minutes a day on an intensive phonics program that also includes spelling and writing sentences. We are excited each week as they develop more trick words and reading fluency. Please continue to have your child read their Watch Me Read Books to you each day or their AR books to you. We are earning beads and charms for our reading necklaces as we finish each book.

Upcoming Events and Reminders

Monday, January 18: No School

Throughout the next two weeks, the first graders will be taking quite a few reading and math assessments on the computers to assess their mid year progress.

Monday, January 11-22: Reading Assessments on the computer. (Early Literacy and Star Reading). Star Math test on the computer.

First grade teachers will also be assessing each student individually during these next two weeks with a reading fluency test. Each student will read 3 probes aloud to the teacher. Teachers will then record the number of words correctly read. This is not a comprehension assessment but a fluency assessment only.

First graders will also be assessed on the end of fiction reading unit next week. We have done our best to spread out all of these assessments throughout the next two weeks. We look forward to sharing the results of these tests with you at our parent conference time in February.
