Supported Decision Making
From Substitute Decision-Making to Supported Decision Making
Workshop Description:
Imagine having your capacity to make decisions, sign contracts, vote, defend your rights in court, or choose medical treatments taken away simply because you have a disability. For many people living with disabilities, this is a fact of life. As defined by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), Substitute Decision-Making gives guardians or advocate the right to make personal decisions on one's behalf.
In Contrast, Supported Decision-Making is a person-centered approach that empowers the individual living with a disability to lead the decision-making process, which studies show offers a better quality of life for individuals living with disabilities. Join us in this workshop and we discuss strategies to move from Substitute Decision-Making to Supported Decision-Making.
