2024-25 FAFSA UPDATE
On Jan. 30, the U.S. Dept of Ed (US DOE) announced that colleges and universities will receive 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applicant data beginning in the first half of March.
We anticipate that the Minnesota Dream Act Application will be available by mid-February 2024. The filing deadline of the Dream Act aligns with FAFSA, June 30.
Students should still complete the FAFSA or Minnesota Dream Act as soon as possible. Use these tips to successfully complete your FAFSA form.
There continue to be issues for populations of students who are unable to file the 2024-2025 FAFSA. Contributors without a Social Security Number cannot access or complete the FAFSA.
The Federal Student Aid Information Center’s number is 1-800-433-3243 (1-800-4-FED AID) has extended service hours for January through April; M-F 7a-9p, Sat 10a-4p. Additionally, Minnesota Office of Higher Education Financial Aid staff can help answer questions about the application or process. The number to call is 651-642-0567. Select option 2. The line is answered Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm.

DECODING COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID OFFERS
After completing the FAFSA, you will receive a financial aid award letter from the colleges to which you have been accepted. Financial aid award letters can be confusing. So how do you figure out what college will actually cost?
Nitro suggests considering these 4 components:
Yearly costs, such as tuition, fees, books, room and board, travel, etc
Financial aid that you don’t have to pay back (scholarships, grants, work-study)*
Financial aid you DO need to pay back (federal loans)
What’s left after accounting for the above 3 items? That is the amount you will need to pay out of pocket.
*Please note that some grants and scholarships are not offered every year. Also, work-study is not a guarantee.
Check out their article at the link below for in-depth examples of how to decode your financial aid award letter and gain a clearer understanding of how much college will cost!
