Metropolitan School of the Arts Newsletter - March, 2023
From the Executive Director
In that time I may have missed a phone call, missed an email, etc. Please reply back to let me know if you were one of those families. I want to circle back and resume our conversations about MSAKC no matter if it was about being a student or staff member.
Welcome to MSAKC for 2023-24
Jonathan B (9th grade) from Olathe
Marci R (10th grade) from Shawnee
Olivia (9th grade) from Overland Park (in process)
Welcome!!
In-Person School Opening for 2023-24 School Year
We will offer the following VPA disciplines: vocal music, instrumental music, theater, musical theater, visual arts, and dance.
We offer a unique block schedule where students will have 6 core/elective classes over two-days and two arts-based classes every afternoon. We are also scheduling every Friday afternoon to be used for field trips, master classes, performances, or other special events. Our philosophy is to allow every student to "shine".
2023-24 Registration is Now Open!
A quick summary of the registration process:
1. Complete online application
2. Complete a request of school records from current school (to determine educational placement)
Open Houses and Informational Meetings have been scheduled for February and more in the coming months. Check below as well as our calendar on the home page of the website.
MSAKC partnering with Kansas City Ballet Day School
MSAKC will begin to plan traditional school events in the “brick-and-mortar” building next fall and our ballet students will also be invited since they aren’t attending a traditional high school. So look for dances, graduations and new traditions to be born!
VPA School Highlight
Like all VPA schools, it has a dual emphasis on both academics and the arts. US News and World Report has SPVA as #219th nation wide, NS #49 In Texas. These rankings demonstrate the strong correlation between arts participation and high academic achievement.
Singer and songwriter Norah Jones is a SVPA graduate.
Congratulations Judith!
Just recently, Judith was in the production of Cinderella at the Kauffman Center. Along with other ballet school students, she was one of the fairies.
This is one of the many reasons MSAKC is excited to partner with the ballet school so students can work hard at their passion - dance - and not be under the pressures of a traditional school setting.

Eight Reasons to Study the Arts in High School
Creatives (a.k.a. artists, performers, musicians) are so diverse that they need to be in these types of enriched environments. They need to be able to express themselves, develop critical thinking and self-reflection, and learn to become who they are. This doesn't always happen in a traditional high school setting.
Virtual Option Still Available
Do you feel that traditional school is getting in the way of dance/theater/music/performing?
MSAKC offers an online curriculum through Imagine Edgenuity - credits earned through Imagine Edgenuity are accredited through Cognia and the North Central Association on Accreditation and School Improvement. Additionally, the NCAA Clearinghouse also approves the curriculum for athletes seeking college admission.
We have a wide range of core content (math, English, science, and social studies) as well as electives (world language, speech, etc) to fulfill the requirements to meet the MSAKC graduation requirements. We can make accommodations to meet any student's level of learning - offering regular courses, honor courses, and AP courses. Here is the course catalog available for Kansas
What is the cost for this program? Parents will pay a $500/year fee for access to the online curriculum from Imagine Edgenuity. You will also pay $50/monthly for student maintenance fee - meaning the time needed to grade work ongoing throughout the month and access to our student information system (Rosario). Parents may opt for a $100/monthly fee for tutoring or academic assistance.
